Tasting Notes:

Curtis Family Vineyards Pasha Bin 388 McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021 is a bold, unapologetically “old school” expression of McLaren Vale power — a wine that honours tradition, heritage and the glory days of full-bodied Australian Shiraz. The Curtis family’s winemaking story stretches back to 1499 in Italy, before establishing themselves in McLaren Vale in 1973, where they continue to draw from extraordinary old-vine resources, including Shiraz vines over 60 years of age and Grenache vines exceeding a century.

The Pasha Bin 388 release is a tribute to doing things the traditional way — generous fruit, bold oak influence and serious structure. In the glass, it bursts with ripe red berry aromatics layered with coconut and subtle vanilla spice. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, delivering waves of ripe red berries, chocolate, coconut and warming spice, wrapped in beautifully integrated oak. A plush mid-palate sweetness gives way to long, almost chewy tannins, creating a powerful yet balanced finish that lingers confidently.

This is classic McLaren Vale Shiraz with muscle and polish — and the critical acclaim confirms it. Awarded 96 Points by Sam Kim of Wine Orbit, 95 Points from Bob Campbell at The Real Review, and 95 Points from Ray Jordan, along with a Gold Medal at AWC Vienna, this vintage stands proudly among the region’s elite releases.

Decanting will unlock even more depth, and the wine pairs brilliantly with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, chargrilled rib-eye, beef short ribs, smoky barbecue brisket or aged hard cheeses where its fruit intensity and structural backbone truly shine. Built for immediate impact yet capable of rewarding cellaring, this is a commanding Shiraz that delivers both pedigree and presence.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"A powerful rendition of the variety, showing blackberry, cured meat, cedar, rich floral, and cakespice aromas on the nose. The palate delivers impressive weight and richness, splendidly supported by a fleshy texture and a wealth of polished tannins. Opulent and richly layered with a sustained, structured finish. At its best: now to 2040."

"Silky, seductive and loaded with blue fruits, dark cherry, cocoa powder and exotic spice. Plush, luxurious and beautifully integrated with fine tannins and a long, expressive finish."95 Point Rated – Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

"Blackberry jam, Bonox, allspice and tar make way for a plush and intense core framed by a cage of salted-licorice tannins. It's ripe with a savoury edge that brings balance and interest, supported by great structure. A full-bodied shiraz that is a touch flamboyant at the moment; time in the cellar will help it shed its exuberance and bring it together. But it also appeals for drinking soon."

95 Point Rated - Ray Jordan

"Comes from 60-year-old McLaren Vale vines in this excellent year. Smooth, so smooth. Yet immense concentration and intensity is driving a powerful wine. The nose reveals a combination of vanillin oak and dark cherry with spicy plum and a dollop of dark chocolate. The palate is seamlessly woven with prune-like fruits, spices and lightly cedary character. Has a slightly chewy finish. Like to leave this in the cellar for a while. Drink by: 2025-2039."

94 Point Rated - Ken Gargett

"The team look to this wine as a return to the old ways, the “glory days”, which should cue everyone into a rousing rendition of Springsteen. Failing that, simply enjoying a cracking glass of red from this brilliant vintage should be enough. Crimson/magenta in hue, the nose gives us notes of chocolate, vanilla, mocha, coffee beans, spices, bay leaves and licorice. There are still lashings of oak, quality oak and well handled, which will possibly divide the crowd a little, but it is a delicious wine and will be adored by many. The palate sees the emergence of bright, black cherry flavours. Excellent length, fine tannins and juicy acidity tie up a most pleasing package. It will continue to impress for the next eight to ten years."

"This is a strong-armed shiraz but the mid-palate has some nuance to it and, importantly – even at four years of age – it maintains its freshness. It tastes of pure, fresh plum into boysenberry, and has vanilla, toast, smoked cedar and musk flavours layered throughout. There are darker flavours too, straps of licorice and blackberry and the like, but red berries, creamy oak and spicy tannin are where the wine’s real power lies. It’s not hard to see this wine maturing in to something truly beautiful."
