Tasting Notes:

The Clifton Estate Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a rich and elegant wine that beautifully reflects the heritage and terroir of Australia’s world-renowned Barossa Valley. This wine is sourced from family-owned vineyards, with a grape-growing tradition dating back to the 1870s, underscoring a longstanding commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

In the glass, this Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep red colour with hints of garnet at the rim. The nose is expressive with aromas of blackcurrant, liquorice, subtle leafy notes, and savory spice, creating an inviting and complex bouquet. The palate is ripe and rich, balancing fruit and oak seamlessly. Flavours of cassis, nutmeg, and plum lead the way, supported by fine-grained, savory tannins that provide structure and a silky finish.

The 2018 vintage saw an above-average wet spring followed by a cooler-than-average summer, which resulted in a later picking season and a long, mild ripening period. This extended hang-time allowed the fruit to reach optimal maturity, resulting in vibrant colours, silky tannins, and perfumed, expressive flavours.

Winemaking techniques include crushing and destemming the grapes before fermentation, with yeast added immediately. Ferments are pumped over twice daily to maximise colour, tannin, and flavour extraction, with temperature control maintained between 22-25°C to enhance fruit expression. After approximately seven days, the wine is pressed and matured in French oak barrels for up to 12 months, adding complexity and elegance.

The Clifton Estate Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 received a 92-point rating from Sam Kim at Wine Orbit, further affirming its quality. Produced by a multi-award winning, family-owned and operated winery, this Cabernet embodies a proud legacy of winemaking excellence. The winery is also a 5 Red Star rated producer according to James Halliday Wine Companion.

This Cabernet pairs wonderfully with roast beef, grilled lamb, and aged cheeses, making it a versatile and satisfying wine to enjoy now or cellar for further development.
