Barossa Valley, South Australia

Grape Variety: Shiraz

Alcohol Content: 15.00
Standard Drinks: 8.90
Rating: 95
Tasting Notes:

Medium to deep crimson/purple. Powerfully intense aniseed, blackberry, mulberry and blueberry fruit aromas, with ginger, mint notes. Vigorous and fleshy with generous blueberry, blackberry flavours, excellent mid-palate richness and plentiful brambly-chocolatey tannins.

Technical:

The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and spend seven days on their skins in open fermenters with hand-plunging twice daily to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins. This is followed by careful basket pressing and malolactic fermentation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak prior to 24 months maturation in our cellars.

The grapes from this wine come from just three small vineyards in the Bethany, Marananga and Light Pass parishes of the Barossa. The Bethany vineyard lies on sandy loams and alluvial clays, while the Light Pass vineyard is on alluvial Sandy Brown loams and the Marananga on rich red-brown loams.

These low-yielding “Barossa Old Vines” were planted between before 1965 and are now fully mature. They have a root structure and trunk thickness that encourage diversity of flavour and character. Their worthiness has been proven over many vintages, consistently producing the highest quality fruit.
Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

Offering fabulous fruit richness and seductive complexity, the wine shows dark fruit intensity on the nose combined with dark chocolate, olive, warm spice and cedary oak nuances. It’s powerfully graceful on the palate, displaying multi-layered mouthfeel and silky tannins, leading to a gorgeously long lavish finish. At its best: now to 2037.

93 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"From Light Pass, Bethany and Marananga. Minimalistic winemaking - open ferment, basket press, 24 months in French oak, unfiltered. Full-bodied, no issue with the vinification per se other than the very high level of extract. Dark chocolate, blackberry."

92 Point Rated - Decanter World Wine Awards

"Earthy wild hedgerow berry and plush black cherry aromas lead you on to coffee, tasted oak and caramel tannins."

90 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Deep, dark red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet is chocolate and cocoa powder, drying and tannic. Slightly fumy mid-palate, a hint of alcohol, the aftertaste firmly gripping."
