Crosswords Clare Valley Riesling 2017

Pale straw colour. Fresh citrus with white nectarine and slight floral notes. Candied green apples with tangy acid and a balanced, structured palate for longevity.

Limb Vineyards Reserve Eden Valley Riesling 2017

Excellent combination of citrus and tropical fruit aromas reflect the nose although on the palate it is balanced by crisp acidity, orange blossom, wet slate and talc giving a wonderfully structured and lengthy finish.Lifted citrus and tropical aromas with a layer of wet slate and flower blossom. Pale green/straw in colour.

Lambert Estate Sweet Jane Barossa Valley Riesling 2016

Sweet Jane is pale straw coloured showing fresh mandarins, grapefruit and apricots along with hints of candied citrus and tropical fruits on the nose. The luscious palate is full of sweet fruits including passionfruit, pineapple and lychee with honey complexity. The sweet finish is clean and crisp and invitingly refreshing.

Pale green in appearance with typical Clare Valley Riesling citrus characters of lemon and lime on full display along with some attractive floral notes.

Shanahans Evergreen Eden Valley Riesling 2017

Pale in colour with a vibrant green hue. Lifted aromas of citrus blossom, lemon and jasmine flower with a touch of dried herb. Youthfully attractive with lemon and lime zest and fresh green apple. Some dried herb and perfume add complexity to the fine mineral acidity. The backbone has a flinty character and a touch of slate. The natural fruit acidity highlights the wines ability to age gracefully over time.

Technical:

Crosswords Clare Valley Riesling 2017

Fruit was sourced from two vineyards in the early hours of the morning when temperatures were at their coolest. Crushing and pressing of the fruit occurred immediately to separate juice and skins with minimal harm to the skins. Only free run juice was used in this wine then fermentation occurred with the use of a natural yeast to ensure the final wine, which was fined and filtered prior to bottling, was a snap shot of vineyard source and fruit flavours were paramount.

Sourced Riesling fruit from an old friend of mine near Angaston (approximately 400 metres above sea level which is one of the critical reasons Eden Valley produces stunning versions of cool climate white wines. In the winery I keep it very simple; gently press the free run, ferment in stainless steel then leave on fine lees for just to build more texture and weight. This wines was then lightly fined, filtered and bottled.

This wine comes from three different blocks on the vineyard and our intention is to make a wine in the modern Australian Riesling style – crisp, dry and fresh.

Shanahans Evergreen Eden Valley Riesling 2017

The Riesling is sourced from a single vineyard in the cool climate, high altitude region of Eden Valley in the Barossa ranges. The grapes were individually picked out in the vineyards for their exceptional quality and picked separately to the rest of the vineyard. To ensure the grapes were harvested at optimum flavour and acid balance, the ripening of the grapes was monitored with regular berry tasting in the lead up to picking, then harvested in the cool of the night. After crushing and must chilling, the free run juice was drained and clarified with minimum skin contact. This juice was then cool fermented between 13 – 15C with selected yeast to enhance the delicate Riesling flavours. The wine was bottled with a screw cap closure to retain the pristine aromas and flavours.

Ready to be enjoyed now and will have a great lifespan which will enable it to be drunk over the next 10 years for those that enjoy aged style Riesling.

If you drink this wine with fresh seafood on a summer day, it is quite possible you won't notice its secret message. It only makes its presence felt on the aftertaste - glittery, chalky acidity - on the way through to this, lemon/lime/green apple fruit will have been the focus of attention. Great stuff.
