Tasting Notes:

Thompson Steer Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

This Cabernet Sauvignon embodies a fruit-driven wine with bold notes of blackcurrant, plum, and cherry. Touches of subtle oak, chocolate, and vanilla bean complete the rich round palate.

Magarey Lane Coonawarra Shiraz 2021

This Shiraz delivers notes of dark-fruits paired with rich red-berry concentrates. Touches of subtle oak and hints of pepper spice complete the palate, for a textured and layered finish.

Shanahans The Reaper Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021

Concentrated fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, black olive, dark chocolate and earth. Allowing the wine time to open up will reveal a natural fruit elegance and perfectly engulfed oak flavours. The finish is long with perfectly balanced natural fruit acid and silky-smooth tannins which will ensure the longevity of this release.

Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2020

The wine has intense dark chocolate and plum aromas, while these components carry through to the palate added mocha; spice and pepper fill the mouth. Velvety tannins and lush rich fruit combine to deliver structure and balance offering enjoyment now and over the next 10 plus years from vintage.

Eileen Hardy McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Powerful McLaren Vale Shiraz flavours of chocolate, smoked meats and freshly tilled earth with layers of plum, raspberry and blueberry fruits. Powerful and loaded with flavour but with wonderful restraint and poise on the palate. The highlight is the tannin balance, with incredibly fine lingering natural tannin providing structure that gives the wine outstanding length & persistence.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

Deep rich and expressive bouquet with black fruits, dark chocolate and mulberries, plum and black olive. Full bodied and highly concentrated fruit with a really plush texture. The flavour concentration is powerful and yet matches with  its impeccable balance and elegance. The fruit flavours of plum and black fruits, all work within the framework, which is fleshy and opulent with a chocolate character shining on the mid palate. There is a lovely spicy note along with subtle hint of oak, but this does not dominate given the powerful fruit flavour. The tannins are velvety smooth which when allowed to open up and breathe illustrate the longevity possible with a long dark seductive finish which is in a word mouthwatering.

Normans Peacock McLaren Vale Shiraz Cabernet 2016

Deep dark red colour, the bouquet of dark fruit and dried herbs and earth on the nose with hints of mocha and chocolate. The palate is full of soft dark fruit flavours when allowed to breathe, there is a natural earth character to the wine reminiscent of a Southern Rhone style blend. Blackberry, and blackcurrant in highly concentrated amounts, dark plum, liquorice all provide an opulent yet not overpowering feel. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco character and a touch of pepper.

Grant Burge Meshach Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014

The 2014 Meshach is inky red/black in colour with vibrant purple hues. It has great intensity and depth which is typical of Meshach. The aroma is truly distinctive, with rich dark chocolate, berry coulis, leather and cinnamon. The palate is textural with powerful fruit flavours and silky soft tannins providing a rich mouthful of wine. The balanced tannins perfectly complement the influential fruit characters. The flavours mirror the complex set of aromas, toffee and spice with a big berry hit. A truly distinctive Meshach from an outstanding vintage will ensure this wine is still drinking well with the best Australia has to offer well into the next decade.

Curtis Family Martins Vineyard Limited McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

Deep dark purple. The aroma displays lifted fresh berry fruits including blackberry, raspberry and mulberries with hints of spice. The palate displays red berry fruits and fine, tannins which provide a structured wine. with generous fruit characters. Balanced by integrated oak and which come together to produce a wine with great balance and style.

Songlines Estates Basket Pressed McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016

Deep purple to maroon in colour. Wonderfully complex aromas with distinct fresh berries, chocolate, mocha and coffee grounds, that run seamlessly through the nose with a touch of fig and cedary oak woven in there also. The palate is voluptuous and mouth filling, the style is rich yet is smooth as silk. Blood plum and licorice are highlights while complexity comes in the form of aniseed, chocolate, mocha and ground coffee. The wine has an understated structure that is quite refined with dusty oak and tannins that build and give length staying with you long after the wine has gone.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Bright and opulent purple in colour. The bouquet is elegantly proportioned with obvious varietal characters of ripe blackcurrant fruit infused with mint, fresh herbs, earth and plum. Wonderful density and depth to the aromatics, which reveal really profound Cabernet Sauvignon character. Fruit driven highlighted by pure plum flavour which is a highlight of Cabernet Sauvignon this year. The intense varietal characters along with some spice ensure a powerful mid palate. Lively with a great core and backbone, the oak is well integrated and compliments but doesn’t dominate. Well-rounded smooth tannins make this one of the most Moorish Cabernet Sauvignon we have produced.

Kilikanoon Omen Shiraz 2017

Deep inky purple in colour. Aromas showing subtle notes of vanilla, blackberries, pepper and eucalyptus against an alluring background of licorice and soft oak. Gorgeous and aromatic. Generously proportioned with a rich and smooth texture that fills the palate. Flavours of plum and blackberry give way to a softly spicy and heady mix of dark chocolate, pepper, mint and licorice. A long lasting and velvety finish, elongated by the fine, powdery, slightly grippy tannins. Vibrant acidity ensures a fresh balance.

Technical:

Shanahans The Reaper Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021

Sourced from a single old vineyard in the Greenock sub region of the Barossa Valley on the Western Ridge. The Shiraz grapes were individually picked out in this vineyard for their exceptional quality just for this specific wine as the vintage conditions ensured small bunches and bunch numbers with tiny concentrated berries which I felt was perfect for this limited release and the style I wanted to achieve. The grapes were picked and delivered to the winery for crushing and were fermented in one small batch. Fermented with submerged cap in a small open top stainless-steel fermenter the skins were basket pressed and combined with the juice before being drained into barrel for 24 months maturation prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2020

Twisted Trunk Reserve Shiraz is named after the gnarled old vines that produce the grapes. These vines were planted in 1865 and continue to produce extremely small quantities of superlative quality grapes. This outstanding wine was made by iconic trophy winning winemaker Joanne Irvine. Fermented in traditional open fermenters, hand plunged and then gently basket pressed, which allows for full flavour and colour extraction. The wine was matured in a mixture of new and 2 year old oak barrels until bottled.

Jo Irvine makes the "Twisted Trunk" Reserve Shiraz for us only in the exceptional years when our grapes meet her incredibly high standards.

Eileen Hardy McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

The 2017 Eileen Hardy Shiraz represents the pinnacle of McLaren Vale Shiraz for Hardys. This release sees the Upper Tintara vineyard, home of the original Tintara Winery, produce outstanding fruit from the contoured vineyard planted in 1892.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

The finest selection of 100-year-old dry grown vines, which are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting finally producing one tonne to two tonnes per acre. The grapes were then hand-picked, and the grapes sorted. The 2019 vintage was characterized by steady ripening of fruit and we were able to select individual blocks in the vineyard to get the very best fruit flavours with some tight ripe tannins. The wine is fermented in vats after extreme cold maceration. The wines have their malolactic in new French oak and are thereafter in the same oak for 24 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration and then further aging in bottle.

Normans Peacock McLaren Vale Shiraz Cabernet 2016

Sourced from a single vineyard in the Clarendon sub region of McLaren Vale affectionately known as the "Trophy Block". Fermented in small open top stainless steel with some whole berries, these fermenters ensure we maintain strong fruit flavour from skins and whole berries. Hand plunged two to four times daily for two weeks then transferred into 1 and 2-year-old American and French oak barrels for the remainder of ferment then spent 24 months in the same barrels to allow full flavour development with minimal topping and Sulphur additions before being bottled without fining or filtration. Drinking well now but if you are patient enough to hold off this will develop beautifully in the cellar and build the aged character which has been a hallmark of this wine.

Grant Burge Meshach Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014

Meshach William Burge (1843 – 1942) was Grant’s great grandfather and a central figure in establishing the Burge family’s winemaking tradition. He was 11 when his family moved from Hillcot in Wiltshire, England, to the Barossa Valley and established what has grown into a thriving viticultural, wheat and sheep property near Lyndoch. In tribute, Grant has selected his finest Shiraz to bear his name and be his flagship wine. Since the first vintage in 1988, Meshach has won several of Australia’s top trophies and many medals. It is generally regarded as one of the country’s best dry reds.

The fruit for this iconic wine is handpicked from near century old vines. Smaller parcels are also sourced from even older premium vines in the Barossa to add further complexity to the wine. There is a portion that comes from younger vines in different sub regions in the Barossa that have amazing flavour and colour profiles. The aged vines produce fruit with tremendous concentration and intensity that make Meshach powerful, yet beautifully balanced. After the dry vintages of 2007, 2008 and 2009, 2010 was a welcome relief with good winter rains and a mild summer allowing even ripening and retention of natural acidity as well as the development of concentrated flavours. The wines already released from this vintage have proven outstanding, and we believe the 2010 Meshach will follow suit.

Winemaking using such special old grapes is kept very simple. After crushing the wines remain in the fermenters for between 6 to 9 days, depending on the extraction required. Most of the wine for Meshach is basket pressed and then fermented in open and static fermenters. The tanks are pumped over 3 times a day with the pump over times reduced from 30 mins to 15 mins as fermentation progresses. After pressing, the wine is allowed to settle for 24 hours prior to filling in new French (20%) and American (40%) oak barrels with the balance predominantly one and two year old American and French oak. All of the wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrel. Meshach spends a minimum of 18 months in oak prior to bottling. It is un-fined and only passes through a coarse cartridge filter prior to bottling.

Curtis Family Martins Vineyard Limited McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

Fruit is sourced from a combination of owned vineyards and premium McLaren Vale growers. The blend of individual vineyard and sub-regional characteristics is the key to the resulting style. Sub regions are Blewitt Springs, McLaren Flat, Willunga and McLaren Vale.

Songlines Estates Basket Pressed McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016

Sourced from select premium vineyards with varying ages. Each batch is treated differently to build complexity and all winemaking decisions were made at the time of harvest not predetermined to a recipe. Fermentation may be hot around 30 degrees or cool around 24 degrees, it may be in open top fermenters with piage by hand or with heading boards. Ferment may be warmed as it begins to cool or maceration on skins extended for up to 3 weeks. Wild ferments are encouraged although for parcels with higher alcohols cultured yeast is used to ensure complete fermentation. 25% of the total is fermented in barrel, giving more intense but softer rounder extraction of oak flavours and tannins. Before being put together the individual batches are matured for a minimum of 18 months in new and old French and American barrels.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Sourced from a small block in the Seppeltsfield region of the Barossa. The vines that make up Exile were pruned severely and as a result of this and minimal water they produce extremely small yields. Exile grapes are all hand picked and the grapes are selected in individual batches by winemaker and vigneron. The grapes are harvested then transported to the winery where they are de-stemmed and crushed individually to small static fermenters. Fermentation was brought on by the use of select yeast strains and the temperatures peaked at 28 degrees before chilling back to 20 degrees for the completion of fermentation. The fermenters were pumped over 3 times daily to ensure the perfect amount of colour and tannin was extracted from the skins. A small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon was allowed to stay on skins for a week of additional maceration after the ferments were complete. The batches were then pressed into new French barrels where they under went malolatic fermentation and are then aged for 18 months before final barrel selection, blending and bottled with minimal filtration.

Kilikanoon Omen Shiraz 2017

Kilikanoon has a history of making some of the best Shiraz wines from prestige regions across South Australia, though today we focus our efforts wholly in Clare. This doesn’t mean however that we weren’t carefully maturing a number of the very best wines from our history. The Omen Shiraz draws on this multi region experience to craft a unique and complex wine.

Early spring rains and a cool end to summer allowed the grapes to hang on the vine longer, resulting in powerful and elegant Shiraz fruit. The region’s famed elevation and distinctive terroir, created the perfect conditions in which to ripen each parcel to its optimum Low yielding parcels of Shiraz were selected from each vineyard based on concentration of flavours. Each parcel was then vinified separately using traditional winemaking techniques, before being aged for fourteen months in a careful selection of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads.

Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2020

95 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Wine Pilot

"From ancient vines in the Barossa Valley, planted in 1865, this is quintessential Barossa Shiraz. It is a wine which makes it so easy to see why this style is so beloved around the world. No shrinking violet here – big, bold and rich. The colour is a deep, opaque maroon, while the nose offers us chocolate, plums, black fruits, coffee beans, mocha and more. Rich, plush, dense, yet balanced, as we move to the palate, there is cassis, more chocolate, blueberries, blackberries and cocoa powder. Balanced, full of flavour, well-structured and with soft, silky tannins, but it is this sweet core of choc/cherry that appeals so much. Will sail through a decade or more. Love it."

Eileen Hardy McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

95 Point Rated - Ned Goodwin Mw Halliday Wine Companion

"Hand picked across a vineyard that is a century and a quarter old. The tannins here are increasingly refined and tautly furled by apposite extraction and long maturation in high-quality French oak. Violet lift. Further scents of blueberry, mulberry, clove, pepper grind and nori. The cedar and mocha-laden tension across the finish is this rich wine's totem. Oak, of course, but seamlessly handled, while auguring well for a long unravelling during extended time in the cellar."

Eileen Hardy McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

95 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review

"Dark and youthful in the glass, ageing gracefully. Brooding dark fruit aromas, satsuma plum, mulberry, maraschino cherry, spice, licorice, cola and sweet oak. Rich, layered, dark and powerful on the palate, with lashings of plum, blackberry, creamy sweet oak and spices. Plenty of plush, dark fruit here, all backed up with an ample lick of shapely tannins and acid drive."

Grant Burge Meshach Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014

95 Point Rated - Jeni Port Wine Pilot

"Meshach looms large in the glass. It’s the Barossa Valley Shiraz’s signature as its creator, Grant Burge, intended. From vines 60+ years old, it holds court both colour-wise – deep, dark with twinkling red hues – and with a powerful presence that belies its age. Big perfume of cigar box, chocolate, spice, plum pudding, black fruits, earth and leather. It’s generous and complex and, yes, carries the bold, warm-hearted Barossa shiraz stamp. It’s packed with flavour that lingers long. Meshach lives up to many drinkers’ expectations of what a traditional Barossa Shiraz should be, and that includes an ability to age. Firm tannins are the not so quiet force behind this wine with the clear intention of providing the framework for that extended ageing. It’s still but a pup and you can’t say that about too many nine-year-old Australian Shiraz."

Grant Burge Meshach Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014

94 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

Very deep colour, starting to show development in its hue but retaining a good amount of purple in the meniscus; the bouquet is very complex and mellow, earthy and dark-to-red fruited, the palate is full-bodied and firm with ample tannins providing support. Stacks of vanilla, chocolate and mocha with a trace of cigarbox starting up. There's been a lot of oak employed here. Impressive plushness and character too.

97 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"This is gloriously rich and enticing with blackberry, warm spice, tapenade and cedary oak characters on the nose. The palate is equally impressive, displaying outstanding weight and power combined with velvety mouthfeel, finishing superbly long and delicious. At its best: now to 2040. $150.00"

Curtis Family Martins Vineyard Limited McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

96 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Wine Pilot

"This wine is part of a limited series of McLaren Vale Shiraz and for me, perhaps the most impressive in the range – which is saying something as it has plenty of competition. Vibrant purple in colour, this offers a lovely seductive nose, which is deeply flavoured with blackberry notes, plums, boot leather, bergamot, black cherries and spices. Hints of oak but melding well. Dense in structure though well balanced at all times, this is very long and has satiny tannins in abundance. It should sail through a decade in the cellar, though is drinking well now. Simply a cracking McLaren Vale Shiraz. Price: $150.00; Alcohol: 14.5%"

Curtis Family Martins Vineyard Limited McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

96 Point Rated - Patrick Eckel

"This is a classy McLaren Vale Shiraz and seems to defy what was more of a challenging vintage. The nose shows brooding dark plum and blackberry fruit that is amply supported by a swathe of brown spices and dark chocolate.

The impact of incredible quality oak in undeniable on the nose, however the way it folds into the textured plum and black cherry fruit on the palate is seamless; tannins are fine and firm as is the acidity but in near perfect balance with the drive and influence of the fruit. The finish has a touch of leather to textured black fruits and lingering spice. Will live a long time."
