Tasting Notes:

98 Point Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Aromas of rich fresh dark fruits and attractive herbs and savoury oak. Distinct Cabernet characters of dark chocolate, fine succulent tannins and dark berries flow through with complex intensity, superb balance and mouthfilling fruit weight. The long more-ish finish is delightfully satisfying. This is quintessential Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

98 Point Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

This Cabernet Sauvignon embodies a fruit-driven wine with bold notes of dark plum and cherry. Touches of subtle oak, liquorice, and vanilla bean complete the rich round palate for instant enjoyment.

Multiple 98 Point 8 Time Gold Medal Winning Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020

Palate shows intensity, richness and a luscious generous mouthfeel. Filled with attractive blackberries, dark plum, subtle vanillan essences and toasty oak held together with silky smooth tannins. The finish is long and complex–completing a very classy wine.

Inventor Coonawarra Merlot 2019

This richly flavoured wine with complex layers of bright red fruits and plum lingers with subtle French oak flavours and fine grain tannins. A soft medium bodied wine which is well suited to immediate enjoyment with pasta dishes, red meats and mild cheeses, or carefully cellar for increased complexity.

Yalumba Samuels Collection Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021

Intensely deep crimson colour, powerful but full of grace and showing fine balance and structure. The wine opens up with spicy blackberry notes. With time in the glass the wine reveals hints of cracked black pepper and then toffee, dark chocolate, and espresso coffee.

Bethany First Village Barossa Valley GSM 2021

The palate has a strong Grenache dominance with spicy and earthy red fruits and aromatic interest holding sway, the supple darker fruits of the Shiraz add real weight and texture to the mid palate and the finish while the Mataro brings a super lifted aromatic intensity of blue fruits and incense. Tannins are supple and generously structured and give length, ageability and freshness to the finish.

Bethany First Village Barossa Valley Rose 2022

A palate with texture and savoury direction that is filled with a blance of strawberries, raspberry coulis, red apples and a hint of fairy floss on the exit. Texture comes from the lees stirring and gives body without sweetness, finish is long, finely shaped and filled with red apple skins and the tiniest hint of strawberry shortcake.

Technical:

98 Point Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

After a low yielding vintage in 2020, everything came together for the 2021 vintage. Mild and clear weather from spring saw excellent vine growth, and ideal flowering conditions led to optimal berry set. As such yields across the region were higher than average, one of the highest in recent years. Despite being a La Nina year and the Indian Ocean Dipole being negative, both normally indicative of wet weather for the growing season, most of the rain held off, with only a few small rain events that didn't result in any lingering

moisture or increase disease pressure. This allowed for an exceptionally long ripening period for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing thick-skinned smallberries that reached tannin and flavour maturity in balance with sugar ripeness and acid concentration. In short, 2021 can be expected to be remembered as one of the great vintages in Coonawarra.

The parcel was destemmed to a rotary fermenter. Fermented using Lamothe Excellence XR yeast, between 22-25*C, with Lallemand Alpha malolactic bacteria added after a day's primary ferment. Few rotations of fermenter, largely relying on drain down/pump over operations to manage cap and maceration. After 2 weeks maceration on skins, wine pressed to stainless steel tank to finish malolactic ferment and last couple of grams sugar. Wine then racked and sulphured, settled and racked again to barrel, approx 25% new french oak hogsheads, remainder seasoned french oak hogsheads and barriques. Wine racked regularly to maintain freshness in barrel. Wine spent 13 months in oak before final barrel selection confirmed, with final balance sitting at 18% new oak, remainder older seasoned oak. The result is a classic

Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon that whilst drinking well now has a cellar potential of 10+ years.

Multiple 98 Point 8 Time Gold Medal Winning Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020

The vintage 2020 growing season started dry and continued that way. The  2019 calendar year was the driest on record for the Nuriootpa weather station. Summer was particularly hot and dry. Not surprisingly, the combination of all these extremes meant the vines generally set below average bunch size, and berries remained smaller than normal as they developed. Later January and February provided some relief. Average February maximum temperature was 26.5C – 3C below average, with average minimum temperature 13.4C, which is 1.2C below the average. This, combined with 21mm of rain on 1 February, enabled many vineyards to slowly ripen their grapes, with flavour and phenological ripening keeping pace with sugar development. Yields varied from vineyard to vineyard and variety to variety, but most are well below average, with indications the region could be 50% below ‘normal’. The good news is flavours and colours (in reds) and the overall quality is exceptional.

Early standout varieties include Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet.

This parcel is sourced from a single vineyard site in Vine Vale in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The vines are 21 years old on their own rootstock, with a westerly aspect on sandy loam soil. The trellis is vertical shoot position pruned to rod & spur. Yield is 6 tonnes / hectare with the aim of producing premium grade fruit. This parcel was harvested at 6am and taken directly to Cooper Burns winery which is only 5 minutes away.

Received direct from the vineyard by Mark Cooper and Russell Burns of Cooper Burns winery. Premium open fermenters were used with Bordeaux yeast added one day following destemming & berry fermented where it is plunged and/or pumped over 2-3 times a day. After cool fermenting (20-22 degrees C) for even flavours and elegance for 7 days, the wine was gently basket pressed off skins before being naturally malolactic fermented in barrel and racked off gross lees. Matured in a combination of 25% new French and American oak hogsheads for 20 months. Unfined with light filtration prior to bottling.

Inventor Coonawarra Merlot 2019

Sourced from selected Merlot vineyards located in the premium growing area of Coonawarra. Fruit was fermented to dryness on skins. Following pressing, clarification and blending, the wine was matured in French oak hogsheads for 12 months prior to bottling.

Yalumba Samuels Collection Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021

Sourced from Barossa vineyards where the vines range from young (approximately 10 - 12 years old) to old (greater than 35 years). They are planted in a diverse range of sites and soils, including red brown earths, sandy loams and dark clay soils. These variations contribute to the great diversity of flavours.

Matured for 10 months in 6% new Hungarian & French hogsheads and barriques. Balance in older hogsheads, barriques and puncheons.

Bethany First Village Barossa Valley GSM 2021

2021 provided us with exceptional conditions for growing high quality grapes. It was one of those years that had a little bit of everything but not too much of anything. We had good winter and spring rains with total rainfall for 2020 being right on the money for a normal average Barossa year (around 450-500mm). This lead to good fruiting conditions and a much more balanced yield than previous, drier years. The growing season then proceeded to give some nice warm conditions but never any of those potentially worrying heat events. Critically, the evening and night temperatures were always on the cooler side.

Bethany First Village Barossa Valley Rose 2022

The 2022 vintage overall was a very balanced and excellent vintage. Adequate rainfall in 2021 was followed a heavy hailstorm which did create some damage in the Shiraz vineyards. However, the main summer ripening season was blessed by moderate temperatures with no very hot (>35C) days and cool nights. This lead to a long and gentle ripening period allowing all fruit to achieve full flavour maturity along with sugar ripeness. The outcome was a long harvest period without any undue pressure from the weather and both white and red grapes showing great flavour intensity, excellent retention of acid and in the case of the red grapes, exceptional colour density.

All grapes were direct pressed with minimal skin contact and co-fermented in stainless steel. The wine was lees stirred twice a week for two months before being racked. The Riesling portion was wild fermented on skins before being pressed to seasoned oak to complete its ferment. Once dry it was blended to the final wine to add textural and aromatic complexity.

A delicious blend of 59% Grenache, 23% Mataro, 15% Cinsault and 3% Riesling.

Accolades & Awards:

98 Point Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

98 Point Rated - Winestate Magazine

An uncomplicated mint driven cabernet with a huge concentration of black fruits seamlessly integrated with the cigar box-like oak and fine tannins that linger across the length of the palate.

96 Point Rated – Ken Gargett Winepilot

An exceptional Coonawarra Cabernet, from an outstanding vintage, this is very well priced and certain to provide pleasure over the next ten to twenty years, if well cellared. The colour is near black with a purple rim. Oak is evident, a pleasing mix of the vanillin and cedar, all integrating well. Notes of chocolate, blackcurrants, cloves, cassis, bergamot, licorice and tobacco leaves. This is in great form. Finely balanced, excellent length, silky tannins. A cracking example of what this variety can do from Coonawarra.

95 Point Rated -  Sam Kim Wine Orbit

Classically styled and splendidly appealing, the wine shows cassis, violet, subtle tobacco and spicy oak characters. The concentrated palate delivers excellent depth and power, while remaining gracious and refined with a sustained structured finish. At its best: 2024 to 2038.

It's instantly appealing on the nose with blackcurrant, sweet plum, clove, olive and subtle cocoa notes, followed by a wonderfully flavoursome palate offering ripe fruit intensity and refined texture. Upfront and delectably expressed, making it gorgeously drinkable. At its best: now to 2032.

98 Point Rated & 5 Stars – Winestate Magazine

Top in Category + Wine of the Year Finalist Great leathery/prune-like bouquet with a rich ripe palate that has complex layers of flavour. Great varietal fruit and a very long finish. Starting to age beautifully.

97 Point Rated  – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

This is lavish and brimming with dark fruit intensity, cocoa, cedar, toasted spice and smoked game characters, combined with a powerfully concentrated palate displaying outstanding depth and substance. Mouthfilling and deeply delicious with stunning complexity backed by finely rendered tannins. At its best: 2024 to 2038.

95 Point Rated  – Regan Drew, Vinonotebook

Deep garnet to purple. Deep and profound nose: Penciled oak, Satsuma plum, Fruits of the Forest, ferrous steel to dry blood, blackcurrant pastille, baked clove, peat, coffee, mocha, old mint and dried fig. Layered and deep. Barossa floor’s darker side on show with richness and length. Tannins are firm, laying an excellent base under creamy oak. A fine expression indeed.

94 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Winepilot

From a single vineyard located in the Vine Vale sub-region of the Barossa, the vines were planted around the turn of the century, on their own rootstocks. The wine spent 20 months in a mix of American and French oak hogsheads, 25% of them new. Deep maroon with a purple rim, this offers a toasty nose with notes of chocolate biscuits, coffee beans and mocha. Hints of cassis and licorice, but at the moment, the toasty and vanilla notes from the oak are to the fore. Creamy texture. This is big, bold and ripe with a core of sweet chocolate. It will age nicely for six to eight years. For those who love big, bold, rich, chocolatey and oaky Barossa Shiraz, this is for you.

Highly Rated – Huon Hooke The Real Review

Deep ruby to brick-red colour, seemingly developed for its age. The bouquet suggests dried bayleaf, humus and 'forest floor', leaf-litter and smoky barbecues. Forward, mellow and prematurely complex in its way. Whole-bunch suspected. The tannins are a bit clunky and slightly bitter—a curious style that needs food to accompany it.

98 Point Rated -  Winestate Magazine 2023

"Spicy perfumed red fruit bouquet with suggestion of tarry/cola elements. Bright beautifully balanced palate generous with solid fruit flavours."

95 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Wine Pilot

"The First Village Collection includes a fabulous Eden Valley Riesling, a delicious crisp Rosé and this red blend – and being the Barossa, no surprise that for me, the pick of the litter is this cracking GSM. Love it. And what value! The parcels come from Estate vineyards and some neighbouring ones. Fermentation was by way of whole berries with varying periods of skin contact, lasting between one and two weeks, with twice daily pumpovers. There was a small portion of whole bunches also included. Maturation took place in a mix of older oak and stainless steel tanks for nine months. Deep purple hue, the wine opens with a cracking rich, ripe Barossa nose. Notes of chocolate, cassis, coffee beans, mocha, florals and blackcurrants. A soft and supple texture with a flick of acidity carrying the wine to its persistent and lingering finish supported by cashmere-like tannins. Drink now for five years, though it will go longer if you must."

92 Point Rated - Robert Parker Wine Advocate

"I think, when you buy a GSM, you want something just like this 2021 First Village GSM. It is sweet enough to give immediate pleasure, but the sweet side of the fruit is tempered by a spicy, slightly meaty side, and then in the final coup de grâce, the tannins shape the wine and form a malleable, chewy shell. It is vibrant, earthy and concentrated. Really, really great."

Bethany First Village Barossa Valley Rose 2022

98 Point Rated -  Winestate Magazine 2023

"Attractive bright floral fragrances with savoury nuances. Nicely focused strawberry and cream flavours on a textured palate with a mineral edge and perfect acid balance."

92 Point Rated - Ken Gargett Wine Pilot

"This exciting Barossa Rosé is an intriguing blend of Grenache (59%), Mataro (23%), Cinsault (15%) and Riesling (3%). The grapes were pressed and co-fermented in stainless steel, with minimal skin contact. Lees stirring took place twice a week for two months, before racking. The small portion of Riesling was wild fermented on skins before pressing to older oak to finalise fermentation. Once dry, it was blended to the final wine, with the intention of adding textural and aromatic complexity. The colour is reminiscent of a lovely orange/pink sunset. Generous aromatics and perfumes flood from the glass. Gentle red fruits, hints of wild strawberries, florals and even a touch of stonefruit. Clean, fresh and linear, it also shows bright acidity and excellent length. Delicious and refreshing now, this wine would sit well in the cellar for four to six years, although, personally, I’d opt for the exuberance of youth."
