Technical:

Knappstein Clare Valley Shiraz 2019

A long dry growing season lead to an early start to vintage. Above average temperatures lead to optimum flavour and tannin development in all red varieties. Quality is excellent.  Fruit is grown on our Yertabulti and Provis vineyards, situated at the northern end of the Clare Valley, this is the perfect climate for maturing our premium red grapes.

Shanahans Silence Is Golden Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

Sourced from three blocks in the western Barossa Valley, from vines aged up to 64 years. The 2019 vintage is another standout vintage and one I would say is well suited to the style of wine I enjoy to drink and craft. The timing of picking was critical to ensure wines did not become over ripe therefore we carefully watched and picked based on berry ripeness not just Baume. The Shiraz grapes were selected based on flavour profile to ensure consistency of style. The grapes were handpicked and delivered to the winery and gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to an open fermenter with 20% whole berries. The juice is pumped over twice a day for seven days before draining and loading the basket press. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 20 hours to retrieve more of the essence of the grape. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in 23% new and 77% older American and French oak barrels for 18 months prior to bottling with minimal fining or filtration.

Draytons Family Bellevue Heritage Grand Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2019

Open tank fermentation 9 days on skins. Clarification after malolactic fermentation Maturation in American barriques.

Curtis Family Martins Vineyard Limited McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018

Curtis Family Vineyards sources fruit from a combination of owned vineyards and premium McLaren Vale growers. The blend of individual vineyard and sub-regional characteristics is the key to the resulting style. Sub regions are Blewitt Springs, McLaren Flat, Willunga and McLaren Vale.

Curtis Family Vineyards Limited Series McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018

These handcrafted wines showcase the best of the McLaren Vale Region. Fruit is from a combination of owned vineyards and premium McLaren Vale growers. The blend of individual vineyard and sub-regional characteristics is the key to the resulting style.

The Colonial Estate Emigre Shiraz 2021

Sourced from two vineyards in the Northern Barossa Valley sub region – the Moppa and near the Kalimna Vineyard, which is the mother vineyard of “Grange”. The vines themselves are aged between 49 and 80 year sold and they are cropped, using green harvesting, at less than 3.0 tonne to the acre. Grapes were picked at dawn, it receives fermentation, which is conducted in small open top fermenters, followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing in 100 per cent new French oak barrels.

Inventor Coonawarra Merlot 2019

Sourced from selected Merlot vineyards located in the premium growing area of Coonawarra. Fruit was fermented to dryness on skins. Following pressing, clarification and blending, the wine was matured in French oak hogsheads for 12 months prior to bottling.

98 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Winestate Magazine

"An intense crimson hued wine that is very youthful with many years ahead of it yet. It exhibits great depth, concentration and vibrancy of varietal fruit richness."

95 Point Rated -  Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"Well. This is a beauty. So much fruit, tannin and oak but in such overall balance. Blackcurrant and toast, peppermint cream and dried herbs, chocolate. Swoosh. It’s big, it’s creamy and it’s tannic but it has energy. Bowled me over a bit, this one. Belter of a Clare Valley cabernet."

Knappstein Clare Valley Shiraz 2019

98 Point Rated & Top Of Category - World's Greatest Shiraz Challenge Winestate Magazine

90 Point Rated - Aaron Brasher The Real Review

"A lovely youthful appearance in the glass. Lifted and complex aromas of blood plums, spice, graphite and anise. Full and richly-flavoured, black fruits, spice and mint-chocolate. The tannins are firm and shape the wine nicely and the mouth-feel and length are impressive."

Shanahans Silence Is Golden Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

96 Point Rated - Kim Brebach

“Dense, profound Shiraz with a spicy nose and a glossy texture. Top red from the word GO. Rich, ripe fruit, dark chocolate and Christmas pudding spices, with some charcuterie in the background. Fine tannins on the long finish round it all off nicely. Perfect pitch, one of those reds you can enjoy now (after some airing) and keep for 20 years. Brilliant. 96 points. A genuine bargain.”

95 Point Rated - Wine Showcase Magazine

“Very attractive nose with tarry, spicy characters. It is stunning densely packed, oaky, fruit-driven style with excellent structure.”

95 Point Rated - Patrick Eckel Wine Reviewer

"A glossy, deep red in the glass with dark plum, earth and charcuterie on the nose that has a gentle nudge of spiced oak. There is a wonderful savoury, dark fruited core to the wine that is laced with dark cocoa; acidity gives structure and drive with a rhone like deli influence on the mid palate. Black cherry, plum and graphite frame the long, satisfying finish. A wine that will live for decades."

95 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Youthful and wonderfully perfumed, showing Black Doris plum, mulberry, tar, cedar and dark cocoa aromas on the nose. The delectably expressed palate offers velvety texture and beautifully pitched tannins, making it sumptuous and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2034. $30.00. www.shanahanswines.com.au. May 2021."

90 Point Rated Stuart Know The Real Review

"Deep to opaque purple core with a brightness in the rim. Plum conserve, lavender and black olive aromatics. Plum fruits and aniseed spices on entry, a soft and weighty palate that is quite textured. Good length and drive into the finish where tannins kick in and grip quite firmly. A little decanter time to soften them would be of benefit."

90 Point Rated - International Wine Competition London

“A distinctive, interesting shiraz with richly spiced plum cake, eucalyptus, marjoram, black truffle and coca powder

Offering lavish opulence with seductive sophistication, the wine shows black/blueberry, perfumed dark spice, cedar and game characters on the nose. It’s immensely powerful and concentrated, displaying outstanding depth and multi-layered mouthfeel, wonderfully enhanced by plush texture and perfectly pitched polished tannins.

95 Point Rated Bob Campbell The Real Review

Supple, warming red with plum, raspberry, spice, anise, liquorice, dark chocolate and spicy oak flavours. The oak is fairly dominant at this stage, although I expect it to integrate within a few years.

93 Point Rated Stuart Knox The Real Review

Deep ruby-red colour from core into rim. Raspberry, anise and oak spice aromatics. Rich and weighty, borderline on the ripeness but firm tannins rein it in. Oak is a little prominent for now but time will settle it down. Very long and drying into the finish

It's gloriously styled and symphonic, showing blackberry, mixed spice, smoked game, cedar and vanilla characters on the nose, leading to a sumptuous palate that offers magnificent depth and richly textured mouthfeel. Multi-layered with immense complexity and persistency.

Highly Rated Jane Faulkner Halliday Wine Companion

Less winemaking artefact especially the oak regime - French barrels, 33% new, aged for 18 months - would allow more freshness and life in. Instead, this dense wine is infused with sweet smoky flavours, a backdrop against the very ripe fruit with masses of tannin. It's sturdy and needs lots of air to show signs of life.

A wonderful rendition of the variety; the immediately appealing bouquet shows cassis, floral, cedar and subtle spice notes with a touch of tobacco complexity. It's concentrated and flavoursome on the palate, delivering excellent fruit purity and persistency. Opulent and stylish at the same time, offering terrific drinking.

94 Point Rated Tony Love Winepilot

Everything about this wine screams classic, familiar, pleasing Coonawarra cabernet, its aromatics lifted with cassis and mint chocolate, reverbing as you drink with a full-bodied backbone holding everything in place. Vibrant, dark berry fruit flavours, deftly supported by good oak without dominating, and discernible yet mild tannins to finish. Very tidily delivered for a terrific Coonawarra cabernet experience for all comers.

Highly Rated Huon Hooke The Real Review

Deep red/purple colour, with a gumleaf-mint aroma, slightly sappy, and the palate is rather tart from edgy acidity. This needs food.
