Tasting Notes:

The Perfect Storm McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Opaque purple/black. Concentrated black fruit flavours highlighted by blackberry, plum, dark chocolate and espresso. This wine is much like a perfect storm; Inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, intense, capable yet complex and mysterious. The palate is in a word smooth and focused with a big whack of blackberry and plum initially which is woven through the backbone of the wine whilst more subtle notes of dark chocolate, pepper and oak whilst firm tannins provide another layer of complexity right through to the finish.

Chain of Ponds Section 400 Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2017

Deep cherry red with a light garnet hue. Intensely complex nose with plums entwined with spice and the earthiness of beetroot while having fresh fruit lift of dark cherry and rhubarb. A touch of fennel and dried herbs helps give a lift and balance to sweeter fruits. On the palate there is generous fruit weight displaying cherry, satsuma plum and blackberry fruits. This is integrated with beetroot, rhubarb and lifted spices. Full bodied with firm, slightly textural but velvety tannins and balanced acidity, great fruit length with good savouriness.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna South Australia Shiraz 2016

Vibrant, dense plum red, red edges. A black Kalamata olive tapenade as a first impression, beneath an overlay of camphor and tobacco. How to say this politely? Boot polish, bitumen, cola, granite ... darkened style/varietal base notes. Yet blackberry conserve and sour cherry fill the (fruity) treble register. Scents of cut straw/steel cut oats fill any aromatic chord gaps. Full-bodied. Substantial. Framboise des bois (raspberry) with pips/vinegar – coulis or apothecary? Meat? Closest association noted – raw/rare venison. Not to deny the welcomed presence of chocolate torte and mocha flavours.

A “cloaked” continuum of tannins that linger and reverberate with the discipline of a vinous pendulum. Finishes intact with a flourish of dusty graphite (input of oak?) and balanced acidity.

Cannon Ball Ridge Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Intense inky purple. Dark chocolate, blackberry, vanilla and cedar nose. The palate is rich and full with black and red berry fruit dominating the front palate. Hints of Vanilla accompany the ripe and firm tannins on the long finish.

Lindsay Park Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Purple with a red hue. Luscious fruit initially with blackberry and plum prominent along with a touch of spice. Plush and opulent with bright berry fruit flavours of blackberry and plum whilst so younger fruit characters of blueberry shine through on the mid palate. Toasty oak with spice and fine tannins provide length.

1838 Reserve McLaren Vale Grenache 2018

A bright crimson purple colour. Pretty, fresh and vibrant joven style with raspberry, black berry and some mulberries. Delicious upfront fruit flavours dominate. The wine delivers bright red berry fruits with a soft and silky mid-palate and finishes with elegant and juicy tannins.

Normans Bin C169 McLaren Vale Pinot Noir 2018

This wine has a fragrant nose displaying lifted aromas of cherries and spice with some savoury notes. Wonderfully balanced pure palate, which is light with subtle texture of cherry supported by well-integrated fine tannins leading to a long elegant finish with hints of spice. An easy drinking styled Pinot Noir.

Technical:

The Perfect Storm McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

The Perfect Storm Vineyard as we have dubbed it sits high in the McLaren Vale ranges with a perfect vantage point to view the many storms that sweep in from Gulf St Vincent across the McLaren Vale region. We have hand crafted a Shiraz by hand picking fruit, crushing and fermenting in small batches and allowing extended time on skins to ensure luscious fruit flavours prevail. Following on from fermentation the wine was pressed and aged in American barrique barrels for 12 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration.

Allow it to breathe if drinking early, this wine is built to last and I expect to be drinking it over the next decade.

Chain of Ponds Section 400 Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2017

Fruit for the Section 400 Pinot Noir is sourced from two Adelaide Hills vineyards and three blocks. A combination of east and west (Kuitpo) and north facing slopes (Gumeracha) with different clonal material (MV6, D4V2, D5V12, 777, 114) to produce distinctly different fruit flavours which combine to complement each other in the final wine. All vineyards are managed with strict VSP trellis.

All bar 20% of the grapes were crushed and de-stemmed soon after receival and soaked for 48 hours before inoculation, the remaining 20% was fermented as 50% wholebunch and 50% crushed fruit. The blocks were partially fermented in a combination of open fermenters with extended maceration and the balance fermented in potters using minimal cap management. Fermented with a varietal enhancing burgundian yeast to preserve the fresh primary fruit aromas of Pinot Noir and stabilise colour. It was pressed off skins after 7 days of fermentation and transferred straight into French oak 60% (7% New) with the balance remaining in stainless to preserve freshness. Malo-lactic fermentation was completed while in oak and stainless and the wine was left on full lees for 6 months to gain complexity and mouthfeel during the ageing process.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna South Australia Shiraz 2016

All the major growing regions in South Australia experienced ideal conditions leading into the harvest of 2016. Overall, the season started off cool and dry, with low rainfall. Spring and early summer warmed up considerably resulting in an average growing season with little rainfall. A warm, dry spring was ideal for flowering and fruit-set. Warm conditions prevailed in the early part of the summer allowing vines to grow well with good bunch set. Milder conditions in January allowed for optimal flavour development, with late rain refreshing the vines.

Despite the challenges of a relatively dry season, ripening was even with smaller than average berries. Harvest commenced quickly with shiraz showing great colour and complex flavours.

Cannon Ball Ridge Limestone Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

At Cannon Ball Ridge our winemaking approach begins with expressing the bright fruit qualities of each varietal and showcasing the distinct characteristics of the Limestone Coast region. Carefully selected grapes from our vineyard near Bordertown were gently pressed and slowly fermented. Aged with American oak for 8 months to allow the fruit aromas to develop and tannins to soften.

Lindsay Park Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The fruit for this wine was picked over 10 days from a single vineyard in the Barossa Valley ensuring a range of fruit characters despite being from a single location. We then crushed, de-stemmed and left on skins in open top fermenters for 7 days. A slow ferment then occurred at cool temperatures, the wine was pumped over to ensure fruit intensity. Once fermentation was completed the wine was pressed into old French and American barrels. The wine spent 12 months maturing in oak then under went final barrel selection prior to bottling with minimal filtration.

1838 Reserve McLaren Vale Grenache 2018

Fruit was sourced from 2 select growers in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. The result is intensely flavoured wines due to the care and attention these growers give them. This wine was fermented warm and received pump overs during their fermentation. The wine is made in a joven style to ensure fruit purity is the hero here.

93 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

Complex multi-parcel vinification has put the seal on an almost unbelievable deal. 80% crushed and destemmed, 20% split 50/50% crushed and whole bunches, part open-fermented in stainless steel, part in a Potter fermenter with minimal cap management, Burgundy yeast to enhance varietal character, 7 days on skins, 60% pressed to French oak (7% new), the balance matured in stainless steel It has all you could ask for, with strong cherry fruit, texture and structure.

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna South Australia Shiraz 2016

96 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

Striking hue, depth and clarity; the bouquet and palate sing in unison with a rich brocade of black cherry and stitches of cedary French oak (ex 30% new hogsheads) and fine-grained tannins. Its balance and length are impeccable.

95 Points Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Deep, dense red/purple colour leads into a rich, ripe, chocolaty bouquet, which has background blackberry and dark plum notes, as well as hints of graphite and tar. A classic Bin 28, full-bodied, rich, rounded and structured for ageing, although it drinks well already

95 Points Andrew Caillard MW

Medium deep crimson. Classic dark chocolate dark berry aromas with roasted walnut, shellac notes. Lovely fresh inky, mulberry, blackberry fruits, fine looseknit chocolaty tannins, and underlying roasted nut/savoury notes. Finishes chocolaty and long with red liquorice, aniseed nuances. A very stylish “go-to” claret type with all of the hallmarks of the Penfolds house style. Ripe fruit, richness of flavour, concentration and chocolaty textures. Although drinking well, keep for a few years.

92 Points The Wine Front

It’s mandated at Penfolds releases that at some point the word spotless must be employed. Here it is. A spotless impression of plum jam, creamy-vanilla whipped over the top, spice notes thrown in to give the party some variety. This wine takes freshness, the Penfolds house style, big company resources, gut-busting volume and good old fashioned attention-to-detail and somehow spits out the perfect consumer-friendly red wine. This is modern Australia in a bottle, in the way it presents fresh berried fruit, history cuddled within. It’s a pitch perfect Bin 28. It sits on the warmer, boozier, jammier end of what we expect from this label, so be warned, but volume of fruit and that creamy smoothness.
