Grant Burge Balthasar Eden Valley Shiraz 2018

Intense richness; deep, dark purple. Pure Eden Valley Shiraz on the nose; deep, dark and brooding. Thick set, broad shouldered and a beautiful perfume of blueberries covered in milk chocolate and clove-cinnamon-cedar oak with notes of lifted eucalyptus and white pepper. A powerful combination full of rich dark fruit that is very typical of the cooler Eden Valley. A wave of clove-cinnamon-cedar oak mixed with a hint of fresh thyme and a full, round velvety finish.

Grant Burge The Holy Trinity Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019

The 2019 The Holy Trinity is a richly flavoured and elegantly structured GSM that continues the long and lauded heritage for this traditional blend in the Barossa Valley. The nose is a playful combination of candied apple, raspberry jubes, frangipane and lemon curd. In the background you see notes of cinnamon and clove. On the palate, you can expect a medium to full bodied wine, fresh and vibrant with enough tannin to shape the wine. Acidity carries the wine through to a clean, slightly mineral and lengthy finish. Lovely hints of fresh raspberries and cinnamon linger on the palate.

Grant Burge Filsell Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

Rich, deep and dark crimson. Chocolate and coffee bean with hints of cinnamon, vanilla & blackberry. A silky smooth palate full of pure fruit sweetness. A hint of popcorn kernel on the back palate driven by the French and American oak combination. Ripe and firm tannins that are destined to evolve this wine into an absolute classic.

Grant Burge Barossa Pinot Rose Dry Style 2020

Pale blushing pink.  A delicate yet complex bouquet with aromas of pink grapefruit and the classic red-berry notes of fresh strawberries and red currants; complemented by spicy undertones of clove, cardamom and star anise and the subtle floral top-notes of dried rose petals and elderflower. Sugar-dry yet richly flavoured with a creamy mid palate. Indulgent flavours of strawberries and cream and sweet spices are drawn through to a long lingering finish by bright acidity.

Grant Burge Thorn Eden Valley Riesling 2020

Very pale straw with green tinges The bouquet is a symphony of florals from musky roses to lemon-blossom and oriental lilies, floating above the sweet scents of fresh Meyer Lemons and Kaffir Lime. There are subtle buttery undertones of lime curd and apple pie with custard, creating a rich and invitingly diverse nose. The richly flavoured mid-palate is awash with the flavours of sweet citrus, which belies the structural elegance and slate-like minerality that runs the length of the palate. Following on from the rich and supple mid-palate, this wine is gradually bound in by racy natural acidity which draws through to a crisply refreshing finish. A perfect balance of richness and elegance.

Grant Burge Miamba Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

The wine has a bright red and purple hue with depth and intensity. While overflowing with aromas of blood plum, raspberry and blackberries, it balances perfectly with liquorice, oak spice and a hint of vanilla sweetness. The palate mirrors the aromas, with bright fruit flavours of raspberry and blackberry complemented with vanilla sweetness. The rolling dark chocolate tannins and subtle oak spice carry through the entire length of the palate, finishing with a long lingering spice and subtle vanilla sweetness.

Technical:

Grant Burge Balthasar Eden Valley Shiraz 2018

The Balthasar Shiraz, one of Grant Burge’s Wines of Distinction, is sourced from the Eden Valley region of the Barossa, showcasing elegance and varietal definition from this cooler part of the district. This wine showcases the fruit power that Eden Valley can deliver. We aim to preserve this fruit through winemaking and maturation, Craig Stansborough, Chief Winemaker.

Fermented in Stainless steel with temperatures reaching 28°C. Pumpovers were performed four times a day with reduced pump overs towards the end of fermentation. Gentle pressing was performed by a combination of basket and bag press. Matured for eighteen months in oak. 38% new French hogsheads with the balance matured in a combination of two-to-five year-old French hogshead and puncheons.

Grant Burge The Holy Trinity Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2019

The Holy Trinity is a traditional blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre. The fruit for this wine is Barossa grown, predominantly handpicked from old, dry-grown vines which range from 35 to 90 years old. Even ripening periods allowed the grapes on the Barossa Valley floor to reach optimal ripeness during what was a very steady harvest in 2019. Heat and dryness toward the end of the harvest created excellent conditions for the late-ripening Grenache and Mourvèdre.

Grant Burge Filsell Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

The Grant Burge Wines Filsell vineyard of near century old vines is considered one of the best vineyards in the Barossa Valley, and consistently produces fruit of incredible intensity and concentration. Planted in 1920, the Filsell vineyard also produces some of the fruit for the highly acclaimed Meshach Shiraz, making the Filsell Shiraz a sought-after younger brother to loyal followers.

‘2018 is an exceptional representation of this wine showing depth and power with restraint. This wine can be enjoyed young but will also cover many decades. The 2018 Filsell exemplifies what the Barossa Valley does so well’, Craig Stansborough, Chief Winemaker.

The 2018 harvest was dry but produced great quality thanks to the retention of water in the soils from the rainy months leading up to vintage. The dry, warm conditions were welcomed creating low disease pressure. These warm, dry conditions coupled with cool night-time temperatures produced fruit with exceptional flavour that were harvested at lower degrees of sugar ripeness creating a wine that is vibrant and balanced.

Fermented in stainless-steel and concrete open fermenters with header boards. Temperatures were allowed to reach 28°C. Minimal pump overs were performed on the concrete open fermenters while pump overs on the stainless steel fermenters were performed four times-a-day, with reduced pump overs

Grant Burge Thorn Eden Valley Riesling 2020

Our Thorn Riesling is sourced from Eden Valley region, renowned for producing some of Australia’s finest Riesling styles. 2019 was a challenging vintage with a hot, dry growing season. These hot drought conditions eliminated excessive vigor and disease problems, and resulted in lower than average Crops. Summer and early autumn were unusually dry, requiring supplemental irrigation to all vineyard sites. The low disease pressures associated with dry, warm conditions coupled with the cool night-time temperatures allowed the vines to produce fruit with exceptional character and flavour while being harvested at lower degrees of sugar ripeness, generally producing vibrant, balanced, lower alcohol styles.

Accolades & Awards:

Grant Burge Balthasar Eden Valley Shiraz 2018

97 Point Rated - Decanter World Wine Awards

“Heady and perfumed with pomegranate, black pepper, plush black cherry and spiced liquorice, while the luscious, textured palate is sleek with chocolate tannins, seamless red fruit and seductive oak.”

92 Point Rated - Decanter Magazine

"Plump and jolly, this is surprisingly sweet, uncomplicated Shiraz from a pair of Eden Valley vineyards. With a fulsome nose of violets over bright redcurrant and mulberry, the flavours are plush and voluptuous from its sassy entry all through the mid palate, but then there’s a lick of shale and granite as it quickly draws to a tight finish. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030"

Grant Burge The Holy Trinity Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre 2017

93 Point Rated - Huon Hooke

Deep purple/red colour, with a subdued, discreet nose that summons earth and toasted-nut aromas. The palate is intense and alcohol-warm, with some headiness and a measured tannin grip that provides good structure and a firm, authoritative finish that lingers on very well. It's still quite tight and will reward cellaring.

Grant Burge Filsell Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

96 Points - Andrew Caillard MW

"Deep crimson. Intense blackberry roasted chestnut paneforte aromas with dark chocolate notes. Richly flavoured and supple with fresh dense blackberry mulberry fruits, fine plentiful chalky tannins, lovely mid-palate volume and underlying roasted chestnut oak/ paneforte/ fig complexity. Finishes chocolatey firm. A classic Barossa Shiraz with rich fruit, oak and acidity neatly balanced. 14.5% alc Drink now – 2035."

92 Points - Stuart Knox The Real Review

"Deep black and blue core that coats the glass, purple and youthful in the rim. Oak influence dominates the nose, coconut, dark chocolate and raspberry aromas. Mouthfilling and rich with very concentrated but poised black fruits finding every nook and cranny of the palate. That velvet sensation sits deep and long into the finish but could do with a little more focussing structural elements"
