Tasting Notes:

Coopers Creek Marlborough Pinot Noir 2016

The 2016 vintage has given his a moderately coloured wine with a bright core and red/purple rim. Both red and black fruits intermingled with subtle oak and nuances of grilled meat.A rich and firm style with bold, sweet fruit and supple tannins. A core of sweet black cherry fruit lingers on the palate.

Coopers Creek Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is always very pale when it is young. As this wine ages, it will develop straw and green-gold tints. A melange of gooseberry, passionfruit, and nectarine back. This wine has a wonderfully inviting palate. It is rich and fleshy, yet retains classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc raciness.

Coopers Creek Marlborough Riesling 2018

Very pale at bottling but with time this wine will pick up green-gold tints/ Wines from this vineyard always have great subtlety and great purity. Lemons and limes, both the fruit and the flowers. Medium bodied and beautifully fine with a perfect balance between acid and sugar. The finish is long and pure.

Coopers Creek Gisborne Chardonnay 2017

As a young wine, this is pale in the glass with pale gold highlights, As the wine ages, the colour will deepen. The nose is typical Gisborne Chardonnay. It is a delightful melange of peach, nectarine and melon backed with subtle lees and oak characters. The palate is full of fresh fruit character, yet also has richness, weight and length.

Coopers Creek Kumeu Pinot Gris 2017

Very pale in this youth, but we know from experience that New Zealand Pinot Gris will develop with age. Subtle, yet exotic. A melange of apple, pear, a touch of earthiness and a pinch of spice. Medium in body, with an exceptional balance between fruit sweetness and acidity. The finish is long, spicy and textural.

Technical:

Coopers Creek Marlborough Pinot Noir 2016

The 2016 Marlborough Pinot Noir is based from a single parcel of fruit from Ballochdale Estate which is situated on the southern side of the Awatere Valley. The vineyard sits at over 300m above sea level, thus making it one of the highest vineyards in Marlborough. It is a spectacular site and in 2016 produced fruit of exceptional quality. After fermentation and MLF in tank the wine was racked to French oak for eight months. Only a small amount of new oaks used, the oak effect in this wine is very subtle.

Coopers Creek Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2018

As always, with this wine, we are attempting to capture the "essence of Marlborough". In total, we have selected six parcels of fruit to craft this wine, Five of the parcels are from the Wairau Valley and surrounds and there is a dash of fruit from the Awatere Valley. Eat site ads a different aspect to the finished product, thus allowing us to give you an overview of what this wonderful region can achieve with Sauvignon Blanc.

Coopers Creek Marlborough Riesling 2018

The 2018 Marlborough Riesling is sourced from Grant and Kirsten Coles' vineyard at spring creek. We have been sourcing fruit from this block since 2005 and the wines have won a number of gold medals and trophies. The fruit in 2015 was in superb condition. This year we used just the free run component to craft this wine. It was tank fermented and as usual we used a yeast called SIHA7. This yeast was originally isolated from a a German Riesling ferment and has proven to work wonderfully well under New Zealand conditions. As always, we have left a dash of residual sugar in the wine.

Coopers Creek Gisborne Chardonnay 2017

The 2017 vintage was lovely in Gisborne, especially the early part of it, when the Chardonnay was harvested. We were able to pick clean fruit with good sugar levels. The juice commenced ferment in tank and then was run off to a mixture of seasoned American and French barrels to complete ferment. The wine then stayed in barrel, on gross lees, for a number of months. This wine is based on fruit from Delwyn and Doug Bell’s vineyard in Back Ormond Road, just outside of Gisborne city. It is all Close 548 which famously is the main clone planted in the famed Cotton Charlemagne Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy. This is supplemented by Clone 15 Chardonnay from Richard McIntyre’s block in Opou.

Gisborne warm climate tends to produce chardonnays that show well in their youth. That said, with careful, cool cellaring, this wine will gain further complexity into the medium term.

Coopers Creek Kumeu Pinot Gris 2017

The 2017 wine is based almost entirely on our Huapai vineyard, with just 1% fruit from our Limeworks vineyard in Hawke's Bay. The fruit was hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. Tank fermentation followed and then the wine rested on its yeast lees for a period of time, before stabilising and bottling.

It is brightly fruited and fragrant on the nose showing Gala apple, nectarine, lemon peel and floral characters. The palate is juicy and vibrant, delivering pristine fruit flavours together with whispering sweetness and refreshing acidity, fishing log and very tasty. At its best now to 2022

Highly Rated Bob Campbell

Tangy riesling in an off-dry style with lime, lemon juice, green apple and subtle floral flavours. Fairly assertive acidity may mellow with a little bottle age but is a little pronounced right now.

Michael Cooper Buying Guide 2019

This West Auckland wine is less aromatic than southern pinot gris but offers plenty of body and flavours. Fleshy, it has fresh, generous stone fruit flavours, with hints of honey and spice, and a tight, dryish finish.
