Tasting Notes:

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

Deep purple with red brick flash around edge. Blackberry fruits with hints of licorice, oak and aniseed. The palate is softly spoken and fruit driven initially with blackberries, plums and licorice notes giving your insight into what is ahead. An approachable mid palate, which is full-flavored, while the fine-grained tannins finish with complex notes of olives, cashew nuts and oak. An alluring finish, which is moreish and smooth, yet has great length.

Oxford Landing River Crossing Shiraz 2018

Dark purple in colour with red hues. Fresh plum and subtle vanilla oak with hints of violets and floral aromas. The generous silky palate has blueberry and plum fruit, complemented by soft, supple tannins with hints of milk chocolate and warm spices. Bright fruit flavours linger during the long succulent finish.A lightly spiced ragù or massaman vegetable curry would be a great accompaniment.

Andrew Peace Kangaroo Reserve Shiraz Cabernet Grenache

This is a full bodied red that is soft, smooth and full of ripe forest fruit flavours. Produced by one of Australia’s most respected winemakers.

Bromance Wines Barossa Shiraz 2017

Deep and dark core with cherry red hue. Perfumed highly aromatic nose once allowed to open up, it shows blackberry and mulberry notes initially with more complexity coming in the form of black pepper, some earthy tones and dark Barossa Chocolate. The palate has concentrated flavours blackberry, spicy plum, dark chocolate, and a touch of pepper which is intertwined with natural fruit acidity, tannin and oak. The tannins have a wonderful length and line, which ensures the wine, lingers for an extended period whilst the oak has transformed and melted into place perfectly to become a passenger allowing the natural fruit acid and notes of pepper to give additional length.

Songlines Estates Bylines McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018

Deep dark black with red edges. Vibrant and youthful but very approachable with an attractive nose showing red fruits, with aromas of flowers, fresh red berries of raspberry and mulberry and soft plums. Cloves and vanilla on the entry palate, the fleshy middle and end palate gives more succulent mulberry and sweet red fruits with dusty tannins.

Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 Export Label

Deep dark black with crimson hues. A hedonistic style which needs time to breathe to show its true character. The fruit characters are blackberry and there is white pepper and some seductive spice. Some age is showing and is evident through the characters of leather saddle, coffee, and chocolate. Powerful fruit flavours are evident thanks in large part to the old vine material used there’s a blanket of tannin and oak which all work together to provide the backbone. Plum, liqueur, leather, earth, coffee and smoked meat all perform back up roles. A perfect balance between oak and fruit has been achieved and these characters appear to have perfectly melted into one another over time due to the use of high-quality oak and minimal Sulphur use. The tannin structure is long and velvety with the wine having an incredibly long finish.

Technical:

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018

The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the northwestern Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land/terroir that runs from just to the northwest of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure fruit flavour is focus. The same equipment that is accorded to our more expensive wines is made available to Explorateur. Fermentation is French in approach for up to two thirds of the wine made; the rest is vinified in a more Australian way.

Oxford Landing River Crossing Shiraz 2018

The Oxford Landing Estates vineyards produce grapes perfect for fresh and varietal wines. Supplementary irrigation and canopy management are adapted to suit each individual site, in order to provide a good balance of light and shade in the canopy and maximise fruit quality.

Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for six to seven days. This creates balance between extracting the appropriate tannins for wine structure and retaining fruit drive and aromatics.

Warm and dry growing conditions, along with controlled irrigation of the vines has allowed a healthy crop of grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The Shiraz harvest in our Oxford Landing Estates vineyards commenced in the last week of February and proceeded for the next month in almost perfect conditions.

Andrew Peace Kangaroo Reserve Shiraz Cabernet Grenache

This wine is a complex puzzle that Australian’s love to master. We have taken the best parcels of wine; blended them together to give you a wine that fits perfectly into your everyday drinking pleasure.

Songlines Estates Bylines McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018

The grapes come from vineyard blocks not far from those that go into Songlines and the fruit has been specifically hand chosen for its approachability as a young wine. 2016 saw the selection of some older material as part of the blend to add some more complex character and add longevity. The winemaking uses warmer ferments in traditional open fermenters and plunged 4 times each day to soften the palate, and the use of older barrels to impart less oak dominance. The wine is matured for 12 months in second and some third use French barrels to provide softer rounder oak character.

Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 Export Label

This wine is sourced from a single old vineyard from what we consider one of the finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley. 2016 was one of the standout vintages of the last decade, the ideal vintage, which gave us the benefit of perfectly, ripened fruit. The smooth flow of vintage allowed us to select specific fruit parcels and allowed us to define the wine as much in the vineyard as the winery. These grapes are brought into the winery and crushed into old vats where the fermentation is initiated by “wild” yeasts found on the grape skins. Careful extraction and short post fermentation maceration is followed by soft pressing. The wine is transferred into brand new oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation is completed before racking and maturation for 36 months in barrels where it stayed with no topping or Sulphur addition.  A careful assemblage and barrel selection are followed by minimal filtration and bottling.

A wine which will benefit immensely with time in the cellar to settle and develop. It will have a great lifespan of around 15 years plus still.

90 Point Rated

The Wine Front

"One of the steals of the year."

"If you’re looking for an ‘everyday’ red then this is the one to reach for. It’s sweet, plush, plum-shot and soft, as you’d expect, but it has far more volume and impact than you’d expect of a wine at this price level. I tasted it in a long line-up of wines and it jumped out. It’s one of those ‘not rocket science’ wines and should be celebrated as such."
