Tasting Notes:

The Shanahans The Reaper Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023 is a limited-release, small-batch wine that showcases the exceptional quality and character of one of Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. Sourced from a single, old vineyard in the Greenock sub-region of the Barossa Valley, this Shiraz is crafted from hand-selected fruit that exemplifies the concentration and depth of flavor unique to this area. The 2023 vintage, with its tiny, concentrated berries and small bunches, was the perfect harvest for this premium release.

The wine is rich with concentrated flavors of blackberry, plum, black olive, dark chocolate, and earthy undertones, which give it both power and complexity. As the wine opens up, the natural fruit elegance emerges, revealing perfectly integrated oak flavors that enhance the overall profile. On the palate, the wine’s long finish is complemented by balanced natural acidity and silky-smooth tannins, which promise excellent aging potential and longevity for this release.

This Shiraz was fermented in a small open-top stainless-steel fermenter with a submerged cap and basket pressed before being aged for 24 months in barrels. The minimal fining and filtration allow the wine to retain its pure, expressive character.

The 2023 vintage has been rated 96 points by Sam Kim of Wine Orbit, and the previous vintage earned 98 points from Winestate Magazine, as well as being named the Trophy Winner for Barossa Valley Shiraz Winery of the Year at the Melbourne International Wine Competition. Shanahans continues to deliver exceptional, small-batch Shiraz that highlights the Barossa Valley’s unique terroir.

Pair this wine with rich dishes like slow-cooked lamb, braised beef, or hearty stews. Its depth and structure also make it a perfect match for aged cheeses like Stilton or a selection of mature cheddars.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated & 5 Stars - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Combining power and sophistication, the wine shows black and purple fruit richness, cake spice, cedar, and dark cocoa aromas on the nose. The impressively weighted palate is opulent and wonderfully textured with outstanding depth and persistence. Mouth Filling and delectably expressed. At its best: 2026 to 2040."

95 Point Rated - Wine Showcase Magazine

94 Point Rated - The Vintage Journal

"The wine spent two years in oak before being bottled under Diam. The colour is a deep maroon with a crimson rim. The nose reveals notes of juicy black cherries, plums, tobacco leaves and black fruits. No lack of tannins here, but they are fine and sleek. The wine has good balance, is of medium weight and has impressive length. The oak has been deftly handled and is well-integrated. A wine with real promise. Drink now–2037"
