Tasting Notes:

A vibrant fruit base of nectarine, lemon and pineapple is wrapped in a slow yielding cloak of warm croissant, butter, vanillan and spicy oak aromas. Subtle gamey nuances bring a wild, complex dimension to a classic Margaret River Chardonnay nose.

The palate has a bright citrus fruit entrance with fine natural acidity, a building luscious creamy texture and then a clean dry finish. A stunning orange and almond friand flavour highlights a generous, medium bodied and rewarding palate that will develop greater savoury weight with time in bottle.

Technical:

All parcels were treated in respect of the unique qualities coming from our vineyard sites through natural fermentation with varying solids levels, fine French oak and battonage programs tailored to the individual barrique. In 2014 we experienced a slightly higher percentage of natural Malolactic ferment than previous vintages. Following 9 months of maturation in oak the parcels most characteristic of the vintage were combined to create a unique varietal Chardonnay from Margaret River.

Another text-book vintage in Margaret River with consistent, almost rhythmic temperature patterns throughout the ripening season, resulting in excellent balance and physiological ripeness of fruit. Reasonable yields were obtained despite a handful of blocks being exposed to heavy storms in Spring reducing their cropping potential, but overall quality is excellent. Chardonnay has intensity and balance, and particularly good natural acidity.

Accolades & Awards:

94 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"The entry point for Vasse Felix, hand-picked, chilled and whole bunch-pressed, cloudy juice to 21% new French barriques for wild fermentation and maturation for 9 months. Throws down the gauntlet with its mouthwatering energy and power. Its acidity guarantees it will thrive in bottle, but there is a strong argument to say it is as ready as it will ever be right now."

93 Point Rated - Ray Jordan The West Austrlian Wine Guide

You will fall in love with the easy drinkability of this wine from the first sniff. It is a fruit-driven style but one with complex mealy savoury notes in there. The palate is light but intense with excellent pure fruit definition. Lovely complete palate and mouthfeel with a lingering finish.

93 Point Rated - James Suckling

A chardonnay with focus and precision. Full body, layers of fruit that are compressed with bright acidity. Persistent and beautiful finish. Screw cap.

92 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

"Second release of the son of Vasse Felix Chardonnay. It is third in line in the Vasse Felix chardonnay hierarchy but the quality is still excellent. Malo isnt encouraged here but in 2014 the odd barrel went through of its own volition. Stated alcohol here is slightly lower than it was stated for the 2013 release. It is a cutting style but it is not without flesh. There is a bit of challenge to it though, a bit of dare; it is certainly not a wine to be walked over. Lemon tang, a rage of grapefruit, toasty oak, spice and slatey/chalky characters. Soft/loud. It really needs another 6-12 months in bottle to get over itself a bit, and then it should drink very well."

90 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

"Light to medium yellow colour, with a ripe fruit aroma showing grapefruit, passionfruit and pineapple nuances, plus some spicy new-oak aromas. A pleasant soft, cleanly dry finish and easygoing balance. Good length, too."

Peter Forrestal - Gourmet Traveller Wine

"The region produces world-class cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay and is generally considered to be at the pinnacle of Australia's production of these varieties."

Tony Love - Adelaide Advertiser

"Carrying a new name, this replaces the regular Margaret River chardonnay in VF's range that's been made since 1990, a first step in a range of three up to the elite Heytesbury. This has plenty of the same DNA with its ripeness kept in check. Tempting."
