Very charming, subtle, delicate bouquet with good underlying complexity, and a subtle smokiness. The palate is intense and deep, with good enlivening acidity, the finish drawing out nicely thanks in part to the refreshing tangy acidity.

Technical:

This may be one of the most senior wineries on the Mornington Peninsula, but that does not stop it moving with the times. It has embarked on a serious sustainability program that touches on all aspects of its operations. It is one of the few wineries in Australia to measure its carbon footprint in detail, using the officially recognised system of the Winemaker's Federation of Australia. It is steadily reducing its consumption of electricity; it uses rainwater, collected from the winery roof, for rinsing and washing in the winery, as well as for supplying the winery in general; it has created a balanced ecosystem in the vineyard by strategic planting of cover crops and reduction of sprays; and it has reduced its need to irrigate. All the Stonier wines are estate-grown and made with a mix of wild yeast (from initiation of fermentation) and cultured yeast (added towards the end of fermentation to ensure that no residual sugar remains), and almost all are destemmed to open fermenters. All have a two-stage maturation - always French oak and variable use of barriques and puncheons for the first stage. Exports to all major markets.

Accolades & Awards:

95 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"Fermented in French puncheons (25% new), 100% mlf, after 6 months selected barrels were blended and matured for a further 2 months in used puncheons. Bright quartz-green; the wine must have had very high acidity before it went through mlf, for neither it (mlf) or the blending and further oak maturation has blurred the fruit profile. Grapefruit and Granny Smith fruit flavours at 14% alcohol are another deviation from accepted wisdom. Altogether interesting."

94 Point Rated Toni Paterson The Real Review

"A highly complex and unique wine with notes of meringue, pistachio and nougat. The palate is juicy and long, with a fine core of energetic acidity"

93 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review

Very charming, subtle, delicate bouquet with good underlying complexity, and a subtle smokiness. The palate is intense and deep, with good enlivening acidity, the finish drawing out nicely thanks in part to the refreshing tangy acidity.

93+ Point Rated Mike Bennie The Wine Front

"Lots of these single vineyard expressions from Stonier these days. A worthy exploration of the region. Strong sense of the concept of ‘balance’ with fine oak, brisk acidity, cool stone fruit character, spice detail, all found in synch both in the appealing bouquet and the lengthy, relatively fine-boned palate. It feels a little tense, perhaps just a little under-powered in grape flavour, but the tautness speaks of a wine for another few years and further."
