Specifications:
Vintage: 2021
Source/Region:

Eden Valley, South Australia

Grape Variety: Riesling
Cellaring: Drink now or cellar up to 2041
Bottle Top: Stelvin
Alcohol Content: 12.00
Standard Drinks: 7.10
Rating: 96
Tasting Notes:

An initial breadth of flavor (freshly squeezed lime and other citrus derivatives) – yet structurally remaining tightly defined. Round and generous. Soft (lacy) acidity conveys fruit, adding persistence, length. Great drinkability and great balance. Deceptively powerful. All augers well

Technical:

Eden Valley experienced plentiful winter rainfall, with average falls leading into spring. However, the following summer and autumn were very dry, with well below average rainfall. Spring and early summer were dry, hot and windy, which impacted final yields, however reduced disease pressure during the growing season. From January, the season became cooler than average with a low number of days over 35°C, near perfect ripening conditions, with cool nights and mild days. Riesling was harvested in the early hours of the mornings, with overnight temperatures clutching 5-10°C, allowing for greater acid retention and flavour development. Harvest commenced on February 19th and concluded on February 26th. Overall, a relatively small but high-quality crop of Eden Valley riesling.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated Tyson Stelzer Halliday Wine Companion

From the coolest summer in Eden Valley since the lauded 2002, this is a brilliant release for Bin 51. Maker Kym Schroeter rightly hails it up with '02 and '05 as the best Eden Valley vintage in 2 decades. It cascades from the glass in a torrent of lily blossom, talc, fresh lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple. Yet for all its exuberance, it is honed and streamlined like only a cool season can achieve. The palate follows a focused line of magnificent tension, powder-fine mineral structure and the scintillating acid drive of cool nights. The most precise and enthralling Bin 51 of the recent era, irresistible now, and with a grand future before it.

94 Point Rated Huon Hooke The Real Review

Pale colour, almost water-white in its extreme youth, the bouquet lime-blossomy, extremely attractive and lifted, fragrant, not estery or yeasty, but all fruit. The palate is a fraction disjointed at this tender stage, lacking the perfect line, but it's a minor thing and will no doubt come together more in the coming weeks and months. Very recently bottled. Great potential.

94 Point Rated Bob Campbell The Real Review

From two Penfolds-owned vineyards. Concentrated riesling with strong lime, citrus, oyster-shell and saline flavours. Lovely mouth-watering acidity that drives a lingering finish. Drinking beautifully now but with obvious ageing potential

93 Point Rated Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

Penfolds Bin 51 Eden Valley riesling is about as reliable as they come, in both quality and style.

First impression was the lasting one. Pretty and perfumed, bath salts and limes with clear floral overtones. Expressive aromatics, up and about, before a dry, lengthy palate. Classic style, in good form. A riesling that you just want to rip into.
