Tasting Notes:

Medium red appearance with some of the Clare Valley herbal minty regional character on display as well as red and black currants, and a little spice. The medium bodied palate is quite soft and rich, with the gentle berry flavours providing ample fruit for the tannin level.

Technical:

The 2011 vintage was a challenging one for the Clare Valley beginning in early March. Most of South Eastern Australia was affected by a series of rain events, signaling an end to the prolonged drought we had experienced for the previous 4 years or so. It was a matter of getting as much fruit in as possible before it was affected by the rain.

The resultant wines are a little lower in alcohol than usual and have a degree of elegance we don't often see. The grapes for this wine were both hand and machine harvested, transported to the winery, crushed and de-stemmed into open fermenters and cold soaked for three days before fermentation was initiated by addition of yeast.

The wine was pumped over twice daily during ferment for approx 7 days and this was followed by draining, pressing and then maturation in French oak casks for 12 months before racking and blending. The wine was stabilised and filtered prior to bottling.
