Tasting Notes

Lindsay Park Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Purple with a red hue. Luscious fruit initially with blackberry and plum prominent along with a touch of spice. Plush and opulent with bright berry fruit flavours of blackberry and plum whilst so younger fruit characters of blueberry shine through on the mid palate. Toasty oak with spice and fine tannins provide length.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Deep purple with red brick flash around edge. Blackberry fruits with hints of licorice, oak and aniseed. The palate is softly spoken and fruit driven initially with blackberries, plums and licorice notes giving your insight into what is ahead. An approachable mid palate, which is full-flavored, while the fine-grained tannins finish with complex notes of olives, cashew nuts and oak. An alluring finish, which is moreish and smooth, yet has great length.

Evil Incarnate Shiraz 2017

Crimson with purple magenta hues. Expressive bouquet with dark berry fruit, some white pepper, vanillin oak and some further depth coming from chocolate and mocha notes. Quite a robust full flavoured Shiraz with blackberry the figurehead here whilst some alluring flavours of smoky oak, cinnamon, fruitcake and chocolate all intermingle through the middle palate before finishing with velvety smooth tannins.

Glen Eldon Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Red brick with hints of purple hue. Mixed spice, stewed plum and hints of vanilla. Rich concentrated dark cherries, white pepper, chocolate, deft use of oak provides amazing tannins balance and structure.

Normans Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Vivid purple with deep red notes. Strong blackberry fruit are evident initially with milder notes of mulberry and cherry fruit overlapping with under lying French oak which adds complexity to the bouquet. The vineyard source used for this Shiraz blend came together perfectly. Full and vibrant fruit flavours of dark red and black berry while subtle mulberry and cherry hints fill the mid palate. Strong tannins go well with the elegant under lying taste of French oak to make this a great example of a powerful full-bodied Shiraz.

Southern Lights Marlborough Syrah 2016

This cool climate example of the varietal is all bodied and displays vibrant purple red hues. It is well stricter, showing great fruit depth balanced with a structured influence of oak and presenting fine integrated tannins.

1838 Reserve Shiraz 2017

Purple to crimson red around the edge. A fruit bomb in its infancy the nose exhibits dark fruit flavours of freshly cut plum and some blueberry while mocha, chocolate, licorice and subtle oak ensure a highly aromatic and voluptuous nose. The palate is quite velvety in texture, with amazing fruit concentration in its youth featuring plum, chocolate, licorice with a touch of spice, perfectly interwoven oak and the perfect level of fine grainy tannin give line and length.

Technical

Lindsay Park Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The fruit for this wine was picked over 10 days from a single vineyard in the Barossa Valley ensuring a range of fruit characters despite being from a single location. We then crushed, de-stemmed and left on skins in open top fermenters for 7 days. A slow ferment then occurred at cool temperatures, the wine was pumped over to ensure fruit intensity. Once fermentation was completed the wine was pressed into old French and American barrels. The wine spent 12 months maturing in oak then under went final barrel selection prior to bottling with minimal filtration.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the northwestern Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land/terroir that runs from just to the northwest of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure fruit flavour is focus. The same equipment that is accorded to our more expensive wines is made available to Explorateur. Fermentation is French in approach for up to two thirds of the wine made; the rest is vinified in a more Australian way.

Evil Incarnate Shiraz 2017

Select parcels of fruit were selected due to their intense fruit flavour and then were picked, transported to winery, crushed immediately. The skin and juice mix is allowed to warm naturally over several days after which it begins fermentation. Fermentation is held cool which helps to retain bright primary fruit characters in the wine. Following ferment, the wines are carefully pressed, separating them from the skins. The wine is then run down to oak barrels for maturation, before being blended, filtered and then finally bottled.

Glen Eldon Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

The Barossa has been producing rich full- bodied Shiraz wines for over a century. Our Barossa Shiraz release continues this tradition.  With vineyards located in the South Eastern corner of the Eden Valley and the Krondorf sub regions of Barossa they continue to impress us by producing small yet concentrated bunches of premium fruit.

Sandy loam and schist ground provide challenging conditions – low nutrients and water holding capacity for the vines to survive – rather than thrive! However, over the last three centuries these sub regions have continued to produce small concentrated bunches of premium fruit.

Baumé reached 14.5 before the fruit was hand picked and delivered to the winery ready for crushing and fermenting.

The fruit was crushed into small 2 Tonne fermenters and fermented for 10-12 days with hand plunging in the morning and again in the evening, pushing the skins down into the fermenting juice, further imparting the precious colour and flavours in to the developing wine.  After fermentation the skins were gently basket pressed for further flavour and colour extraction.  The wine was then racked to a mixture of new and three-year-old French and American oak hogsheads.  Every six months the wines were racked to tank and returned to oak, slowly removing deposits and assisting with clarity.

Normans Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The wine was fermented in small stainless steel fermentors to retain concentrated fruit flavours. To complete the fermentation process and maturation the wine went into mostly old oak barrels with a small percentage of new oak for a period of 12 months. This enabled the use of the 100% French barrels to slowly infiltrate the highly concentrated fruit flavour creating a well balanced yet complex tannin structure. At this early stage this vintage appears to be one of the stand out Old Vine Shiraz blends in the past 5 years.

Southern Lights Marlborough Syrah 2016

Southern Lights Syrah is sourced from an established vineyard in Marlborough’s Souther Valley region. Created with minimal intervention, handpicked and patiently aged for 18 months in 50% are French oak.

1838 Reserve Shiraz 2017

Fruit was sourced from several well-known growers in South Australia from what was another great vintage in terms of quality although yields were down across the region. The different sites allowed us to pick the fruit over a extended period allowing each vineyard to develop differing characters to compliment each other and also allowed us at the winery to treat the parcels individually in small ferments with longer than usual skin contact, which is always ideal. The result is an outstanding wine with obvious time and care taken with it throughout the vinification process. This wine was fermented warm and received pump overs on a daily basis during fermentation. Aged in primarily old 2-3 year old oak to add another level of complexity without over powering the fruit.
