Tasting Notes:

Deep ruby with crimson hues. Fragrant, floral aromas of violets over spicy blackberry, raspberry and blueberry, with underlying spice notes of anise and black pepper, with sage, bay leaf and cedar. The palate is spicy, juicy and concentrated with ripe blueberry and freshly cut strawberry and plum creating layers of flavor with bright acidity and complexity from long, fine, savoury tannins.

Technical:

This shiraz, grenache, mataro, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the wine grapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.

Viognier co-fermented with shiraz; grenache and mataro fermented separately. Matured in 6% new and 94% seasoned French hogsheads for 10 months prior to blending and bottling.

Vintage 2019 shaped up to be a challenging one, with below-average yields, however the quality was very high, with beautiful expressions of varietal character and generally good balance and structure. The hand-picked fruit that arrived at the winery in the cool of the morning was clean, with good concentrated flavours. A dry winter, spring and summer with warmer than average temperatures in January and February lead to the advancement of maturity of all grape varieties in the Eden Valley and an early onset of vintage. The later-ripening varieties, riesling and cabernet were standouts, however most varieties were of a very high standard, including shiraz despite miniscule yields.

74% Shiraz 16% Grenache 8% Mataro 2% Viognier

Accolades & Awards:

93 Point Rated - Mike Knox The Real Review

"Deep ruby core, purple rim tints. A nose of bramble forest berries and wakame. The palate is bright, juicy and fresh. Layered berries with iodine and herbal complexities. Goes long and deep without ever feeling heavy. A delicious glass of wine"

92 Point Rated - Angus Hughson winepilot.com

"...radiates Barossa personality and is chock-a-block full of mouth filling, generous and supple fruit for drinking right now. Barossa shiraz, grenache and mataro have been blended with a splash of viognier to give this wine instant appeal and good complexity. Open knit, bright and jubey Barossa blackberry and baked earthy fruits are lifted by nice touches of raspberry, sage and white pepper. It’s also fleshy and vibrant in the mouth – again layers of dark berry fruit with subtle oak are supported by soft tannins to give great drinkability. Enjoy it with roast beef."

91 Point Rated - Mike Bennie The Wine Front

"This is sweet at its heart and soft and lush. It’s silky textured, generous in a way, has some nice tightening tannins and a brisk, tart finish for freshness. Mixed forest berries, that kind of heady, sweet woody spice thing, a bit of apricot, and, certainly a slickness and sweetness mid palate that says something about the white grape viognier. Easy drinking..."
