This full-bodied, rich and complex wine benefits from a blend of grapes from four vineyards, all with mature vines aged between 15 and 25 years. It has ripe berry flavours, plenty of spice and earthiness, and finishes with beautifully balanced tannins.
94 Points James Halliday Wine Companion
"Open and static fermenters with pump-overs and hand-plunging, matured for 18 months in new and used French oak. Everything about this wine points to China. It is densely coloured and full-bodied. The regime in the winery doesn't point to over-extraction, the power of the blackberry, black cherry and licorice fruit flavours comes from the vineyard. Will live for decades."
92 Points Australian Wine Review
"Maroon red, there is characteristic cedar and currant on the nose, with a generous dollop of caramel oak in there too. The attraction though is the palate, which is even, carefully driven by tannins and with a freshness and balance, even if the toastiness of the oak looks a bit overt. Not bad at all. Quite long too, with a certain grace. Score should improve as the oak integrates."
94 Points Sam Kim Wine Orbit
"This is true and clear for what it is. Beautifully lifted aromas of cassis, plum, cigar box and warm spice on the nose, leading to a succulent palate that is plump and soothing. The wine offers fabulous fruit ripeness and intensity, while remaining elegant and stylish. A gorgeous expression of cabernet from the Yarra. At its best: now to 2023. AU$70.00"
Good winter rainfall leading to excellent soil moisture set the scene for a great vintage. There was early heat mid- spring and a long dry summer, with welcome rain events in February and March. Harvest was generally earlier than the long-term average, with early ripening varieties picked from mid-February. The warm days and cool nights of autumn produced excellent conditions for later ripening varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, which was picked from late-March. This wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barriques, one third new.
