Perfume, elegant fruit flavours, and soft ripe tannins are all hallmarks of this exceptional Pinot Noir. A typical Martinborough summer has created the distinctive Escarpment style showing complexity, attractive texture and the perfect mix of black, red and green fruit flavours for which Pinot Noir is celebrated.
Escarpment Pinot Noir is inspired by the classic wines of Burgundy. This wine is a tribute to Martinborough’s unique terroir. Our winemaking philosophy is to make wines that exhibit their place, a goal we set ourselves especially for Pinot Noir when the vines were planted 21 years ago. 100% Martinborough fruit with the majority coming from our Te Muna Road Vineyard. This wine is typically a blend of Dijon clones 667 and 777 and Abel, with clones 114 and 115 occasionally. It exhibits fruit, complexity and texture, beautifully. The fruit was hand harvested, then gently handled without pumping until it was pressed. Hand plunged every 12 hours then left to macerate on skins for an average vat time of 18 days. It has been aged completely in French oak barriques, of which 25% were new, for 11 months. Inspired by the classic wines of Burgundy, this Pinot Noir is a tribute to Martinboroughs unique terroir. It will cellar gracefully for up to 10 years.
94 Point Rated - Bob Campbell
"Attractively-scented pinot noir with floral, violet, dark cherry, berry and spice flavours. Sweet fruit restrained by a backbone of firm tannins. Accessible now but deserves a few years in bottle to bring out its best"
93 Point Rated - Christina Pickard Wine Enthusiast Magazine
"Winemaker Larry McKenna is known as the King of Pinot Noir in the Wairarapa-Martinborough region and this wine, as well as his single vineyards, clearly demonstrates why. Highly perfumed and spicy, it's a heady combo of bright red berries, greengage plums, cloves, cedar and a streak of minerality like morning sun warming stones. On the palate, tannins are powdery and fine, slinking around crunchy red berries. This is a tightrope walk of elegance and purity, delicacy and power."
91 Point Rated - Huon Hooke
"Medium ruby colour with a good tinge of purple. The bouquet opens with a trace of smoky sulfide that clears as it airs to reveal 'forest floor' undergrowth, dried-herb savoury nuances. Walnuts. Spiced plums, too. In the mouth, it's medium to light-bodied with more intensity than the 'Noir' and a trace of bitterness in the tannins, which would disappear with food. A soft, drying sensation cleanses the finish. (30% whole-bunches)"
