Black, deep midnight purple. Liqueur coffee edge with ‘Black Kat' licorice, tobacco leaf, lifted spicey leather, sweet earthiness and Kalamata skin. Superb clarity and brightness of traditional elements expected in a classic Australian Syrah. Black fruit and savory components mingle on a weighted, meaty structure. Expressive, bright characters are counter-weighted by restraint exhibited in this elegantly positioned and lineated example.
92 Point Rated - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
"The 2005 Syrah Bakers Gully offers fragrant aromas of smoke, bacon, tar, mulberry, and blueberry compote. Perhaps the most forward of the Syrah selections, it can be enjoyed in its youth but should drink well through 2020."
91 Point Rated - Wine Enthusiast
"Full in body and lush in texture, the 2005 Bakers Gully Syrah boasts exuberant aromas of fruitcake, followed up by flavors of brandied cherries, blueberries and blackberries. The long finish features hints of cracked pepper and licorice."
91 Point Rated - Wine Spectator
"Dark and juicy, with a layer of clove and black olive weaving through the blackberry and tar flavors, lingering on the refined finish. The tannins are well-integrated."
90 Point Rated - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
"Opaque ruby. Liqueur-like blackberry and cassis on the nose, with cured tobacco, espresso and candied licorice accents. Weighty dark berry flavors display almost syrupy concentration, with mocha, vanilla and floral pastille accents. This is almost too much of a good thing, and Old World drinkers may recoil from this. But there's improbably good structure and focus here too."
This wine forms part of Clarendon Hills’ ‘Village’ wine classification. Young vines are used to produce this energetic and exuberant syrah. Simplistic and honest, this cuvee boasts elementary varietal depth and light complexity. It is best consumed within the first 15 years of life.Young, dry grown 10 y/o vines are hand picked thereby culturing whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. This increases the retention of the grape’s varietal essence and minimises bitter tannin extract. All pressings are returned to the barrel and bottled onsite without fining or filtration. 18 months, 60% brand new, tight-grained French Oak. 40% mixture of 1-4 year old barrel hierarchy. Barrels are finally hand selected by winemaking team.
