Tasting Notes

The Colonial Estate Alexander Laing Barossa Grenache 2017

Bright cherry red and purple colour. Focused and highly aromatic nose with cherry, redcurrant and subtle notes on hibiscus and earth. Concentrated rich red berry flavours with red licorice, raspberry touches whilst an almost crunchy feel and a touch of spice adds depth of flavour. The tannins are smooth as silk and carry the wine up until a long and well-balanced fruity finish.

Einzellage 100 Year Old Vine Valley Floor Barossa Valley Grenache 2017

Lovely purple colour with red hue. A bright, red cherry, blueberry and cranberry packed nose. Light to medium bodied the bouquet doesn’t let you down as your met with overwhelming fruit flavours of blueberry and cherry, its back with some herbal notes and finishing with soft tannin which round everything up provided a wine only describable as beautifully pretty.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Grenache Mourvedre Shiraz 2017 By Neil Pike

Medium to deep red colour with attractive aromas of blueberries, peppercorns and graphite plus a little mintiness in the mix too. The medium bodied palate is soft, round and bright. Very approachable with good concentration of fruit and almost nil oak.

Stone Cottage Barossa GSM 2017

Vivid purple-red in colour. Raspberry, musk perfume, mixed candy and sarsaparilla as well as savoury spice and dried herbs on the nose. The palate is loaded with fresh ripe fruit.  Flavours of freshly crushed raspberry and ripe plum dominate. The tannins are very soft and the Shiraz provides excellent weight and a muscular structure. A very fruit driven, mouthwatering wine.

Western Barossa Wines Barossa Valley GSM 2016

Deep crimson red with vibrant purple hues. Rich blackberry aromas supported integrated spicy vanillin oak. Impressively rich and opulent the palate delivers what the nose promises. Spicy dark berry fruit with cassis and cherry being dominant. Blackberry and some freshly cut plum provide a round fruit driven mid palate whilst the skillful use of second and third use oak ensure this is a full-flavoured and complex wine with stylish oak tannins.

"Sweet raspberry and mint with sprays of blossomy herbs, fresh fennel too. Lightish and shortish but what's here is enjoyable."

Technical

The Colonial Estate Alexander Laing Barossa Grenache 2017

Alexander Laing is sourced from a single 100 year old vineyard in Tanunda, which is dry grown and was planted over a century ago. Hand picked to preserve the old vines and ensure they are not damaged and also to ensure fruit purity we insist on hand picking old vine Grenache. The fruit was crushed and destemmed immediately after the being picked in the cool early hours of the morning. Fermentation on skins using a selected yeast type occurred for 8-9 days at 20-25 degrees to maximise colour and flavour extraction. The oak maturation was critical with this wine and we aged individual parcels in differing oak prior to barrel selection and final blending of only the best quality barrels.

Einzellage 100 Year Old Vine Valley Floor Barossa Valley Grenache 2017

Sourced From One Of Barossa Valleys Most Revered Growers from a single vineyard located on the outskirts of Tanunda on the Valley Floor from a vineyard which just celebrated its 100th birthday. Fruit was picked in early hours of morning when temperatures were at their lowest for the day to ensure fruit remained crisp whilst being transported to winery. The grapes were destalked and placed uncrushed into small stainless steel open top fermenters. Cultured yeast was used to start fermentation and the tanks were hand plunged spending 7 days on skins at 26 degrees. The skins we gently pressed and we kept the wine in tank to create a virgin style of Grenache to retain fleshy fruit flavours then bottled with minimal filtration and no fining.

Clare Hills Clare Valley Grenache Mourvedre Shiraz 2017 By Neil Pike

The 2017 vintage was shaped by a cool, wet winter and spring with above average rainfall. Budburst was later than the “recent normal” due to the cooler conditions in September and consequently harvest was also a little late – we commenced vintage on March 3rd. Leading up to harvest January and February were both quite mild with no extended periods of heat and little rain. The 20mm we did receive on 20th January finished the vineyards off nicely.

The grapes for this wine were machine and hand harvested, transported to the winery, de-stemmed into open fermenters and cold soaked for three days before fermentation began. The wine was pumped over twice daily during ferment for approx 7 days and this was followed by draining, pressing and then maturation in French oak casks for 14 months before racking and blending. The wine was stabilised and lightly filtered prior to bottling.

Western Barossa Wines Barossa Valley GSM 2016

We hand picked a small section of Grenache from Block 4 rows 7-23, Shiraz from block 5 rows 1-12 and block 8 rows 3-9 to created a style of wine guided by the fruit initially. We wanted a wine driven by fruit yet surrounded in a bed of spicy flavours and tannin therefore selected these small sections as the fruit produced dark berry flavours with wonderful spice characters which would infiltrate not be overwhelmed by second and third use oak. The fruit was transferred to the winery and the fruit was combined together to ensure it worked harmoniously through the entire winemaking process; macerated for an extended period with seeds and stems to allow us to give a vision of the vineyard in the final wine. The wine was left in this state for 30 days and hand plunged which ensured we extracted all the colour, aromas and tannin we could. Basket pressed into barrel again allowed us to continue the hands off method and ensure fruit purity was key again this ensures longevity. The wine was not topped during its 256 days it spent in barrel then finally it received minimal filtration and fining. This wine illustrates just how beautiful a wine from the warm Wild West can be, in a word moreish.

A wine, which will appear beautifully, round and lavish if drunk upon release whilst the oak tannins provide a backbone, which will ensure drinking over the next decade will not be a problem.
