Mt Hector Wairarapa Pinot Noir 2016

This is a lively young pinot. Bright, ripe and fragrant, the inviting bouquet shows dark plum, blueberry, raspberry and floral characters with subtle spicy complexity. The palate is fruited and rounded, and offers strong fruit richness and intensity, supporting a silky texture and fine tannins.

Mt Hector Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2017

This refreshing, aromatic wine has wonderful aromas of fresh limes and ripe citrus, with a juicy gooseberry palate and lingering finish. Pair it with your favourite seafood and pasta dishes.

Mt Hector Wairarapa Pinot Gris 2018

This wine has fresh aromas of elderflower and yellow roses. The palate has a luscious mouthfeel, with warm fruit flavours of lychee, citrus zest and nashi pears balancing the vibrant finish. A good match for pork and apple sauce, and an excellent foil for spicy Asian food.

Technical:

Mt Hector Wairarapa Pinot Noir 2016

This Pinot Noir is sourced from the home vineyard in the Wairarapa and is comprised of several different clones of the Pinot Noir grape. Care is taken in the vineyard to ensure the crops are not high and that the fruit is well exposed so that it can ripen properly.

In the winery, the different batches of fruit are processed separately so that we can see the individual characters on their own and we add further complexities by incorporating different techniques and yeast combinations. The grapes are cold soaked for between 3 and 5 days and then fermented at about 28-32 °C. Depending on the fruit, post ferment time ranges from 3-10 days, before the wine is pressed off. The wine is then held in both tank and barrel for 10 months, undergoing malolactic fermentation, before being blended for bottling.

Mt Hector Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2017

The fruit for this wine was grown in four Wairarapa vineyards, each with differing soils. One is stony loams, from which this wine is predominantly produced, while the others are a mixture of silt loams and hillside clays. This variety provides different flavour profiles, which helps us to increase the complexity of the finished wine. These vines are relatively young, and are cropped at low yield levels to give intensely flavoured grapes.

The focus in the winery is to capture the pure fruit flavours that come from the vineyard, whilst adding complexity through our winemaking efforts to produce a multi-dimensional wine. This is achieved by tank fermenting the juice using yeasts that are able to ferment at low temperatures – preserving the essential fruit flavours.

Mt Hector Wairarapa Pinot Gris 2018

Fruit for this Pinot Gris is sourced from our vineyard in the northern Wairarapa. Care is taken in the vineyard to ensure the crops are not high and that the fruit is exposed so that it can ripen well.

Highly Rated Raymond Chan

Bright, light straw-yellow colour, lighter on the rim. The nose is very fresh and bright with banana and confectionary-like fermentation esters, revealing white and yellow florals, pears and nuances of tropical fruits. The aromatics form a softly concentrated core. Medium-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has restrained flavours of florals and pear fruit along with bubble-gum fermentation esters. The flavours are rounded and along with the soft acidity form a gentle heart. The wine flows softly along a smooth palate line, leading to a light finish. This is a clean, medium-dry, rounded and smooth Pinot Gris with light floral and pear fruit lifted by fermentation esters. Serve with Middle Eastern fare over the next 2 years.
