Tasting Notes:

2x 1838 Reserve McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Purple to crimson red around the edge. A fruit bomb in its infancy the nose exhibits dark fruit flavours of freshly cut plum and some blueberry while mocha, chocolate, licorice and subtle oak ensure a highly aromatic and voluptuous nose. The palate is quite velvety in texture, with amazing fruit concentration in its youth featuring plum, chocolate, licorice with a touch of spice, perfectly interwoven oak and the perfect level of fine grainy tannin give line and length.

1x Limb Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Intense deep ruby red with purple hues. Plum, dark cherry, licorice with round voluptuous oak and chocolate all playing supporting roles. This wine illustrates exactly how I have been handcrafting premium red wine for my entire life, in the vineyard. The terror and microclimate of specific blocks produce something different year with the obvious characters of this vintage being plum, anise, black pepper and chocolate. The extended time in barrel and use of different aged oak mainly older allowed this flavour to infiltrate the wine without over powering it and to run seamlessly into the natural tannin structure of the wine.

1x The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

Deep black in colour. Bouquet filled with liquorice, blackberry and dark plum fruit with layers of fennel spice and Smokey oak. Full bodied fruit with a really plush texture. The fruit flavours of blackberry, dark plum all work within the framework, which is fleshy and opulent with a licorice character shining on the mid palate. Subtle hint of fennel and oak along with lovely spicy notes. Velvety smooth tannins which when allowed to open up and breathe illustrate the longevity possible with a long dark seductive finish which is all interwoven between a backbone of oak and tannin perfectly.

2x Amakira Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2017

Deep dark red core and purple hue. Concentrated aromas of chocolate, ripe blackberries, liquorice and spice. Mouth filling almost creamy ripe blackberry with spicy red fruits and smooth yet complex tannins, Vanilla oak and hints of chocolate and liquorice.

1x The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Deep purple with red brick flash around edge. Blackberry fruits with hints of licorice, oak and aniseed. The palate is softly spoken and fruit driven initially with blackberries, plums and licorice notes giving your insight into what is ahead. An approachable mid palate, which is full-flavored, while the fine-grained tannins finish with complex notes of olives, cashew nuts and oak. An alluring finish, which is moreish and smooth, yet has great length.

3x Normans Estate Est 1853 Vine Ancestry Shiraz 2017

Well-balanced elegant nose with soft freshly cut plum, blackberry and blueberry notes showing its youthfulness at this stage. This is complimented with star anise spice giving depth to the highly aromatic bouquet. Full and vibrant with an initial surge of juicy fruit flavours of blackberry, plum and mulberry. The oak and tannins are smooth and subtle with the under lying taste whilst some spice and natural fruit acid give length and definition. An outstanding match with all full flavoured red meat dishes. I find it goes well with the over powering delicious flavour of barbequed spare ribs!

2x Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2010

A vivid purple crimson colour. Exceptionally rich and generous aromas, earth, chocolate and licorice hits are followed by an intense array of black fruits with white pepper, pencil shavings, smoked meat and cedar. This is a big wine there is obvious black fruits of all kinds, a earthy character is evident reflecting age plus cassis with a touch of acid which obviously gives longevity. The dense fruit and oak characters have blended together wonderfully and coat the mouth to ensure the finish is epically long and you get some very subtle nutmeg and saddle notes. A big, bold, chunky style of Barossa Valley Shiraz the way it should be.

Technical:

1838 Reserve McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Fruit was sourced from several well-known growers in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia from what was another great vintage in terms of quality although yields were down across the region. The different sites allowed us to pick the fruit over a extended period allowing each vineyard to develop differing characters to compliment each other and also allowed us at the winery to treat the parcels individually in small ferments with longer than usual skin contact, which is always ideal. The result is an outstanding wine with obvious time and care taken with it throughout the vinification process. This wine was fermented warm and received pump overs on a daily basis during fermentation. Aged in primarily old 2-3 year old oak to add another level of complexity without over powering the fruit.

Limb Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Picking started in early March when I felt the colour and baume levels were at an optimum much later than has been the “norm” in recent times then the grapes were gently crushed and fermented in my small capacity open top fermenters for 7 days with plunging twice daily. The wine was then pressed and drained off into old American hogsheads’ for 12 months prior to bottling. This wine encapsulates Barossa Valley Shiraz the way it should be, an honest reflection of the vineyard where it was grown.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Shiraz 2015

The bulk of the vines are dry grown old vines, which are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting finally producing one tonne to two tonnes per acre. Exile grapes are then hand picked and the grapes sorted. The wine is fermented in vats after extreme cold maceration. The wines have their malolactic in new French oak, and are thereafter in the same oak for 24 months prior to bottling with minimal filtration and then further aging in bottle.

Amakira Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2017

Shiraz fruit was sourced from select vineyards were crushed immediately after delivery to the winery. The skin and juice mix is allowed to warm naturally over several days after which it begins fermentation. Fermentation is held cool which helps to retain bright primary fruit characters in the wine. Following ferment, the wines are carefully pressed, separating them from the skins. The wine is then run down to oak barrels for eight months for maturation, before being blended, and then bottled.

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the northwestern Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land/terroir that runs from just to the northwest of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure fruit flavour is focus. The same equipment that is accorded to our more expensive wines is made available to Explorateur. Fermentation is French in approach for up to two thirds of the wine made; the rest is vinified in a more Australian way.

Normans Estate Est 1853 Vine Ancestry Shiraz 2017

Sourced from multiple sites in South Australia from vines aged from 35 - 80 years of age. The wine was fermented in small stainless steel fermenters to retain concentrated fruit flavours. To complete the fermentation process and maturation the wine went into mostly old oak barrels with a small percentage of new oak for a period of 12 months. This enabled the use of the finely toasted oak barrels to slowly infiltrate the highly concentrated fruit flavour creating a well-balanced yet complex tannin structure.

Fu Barossa Valley Shiraz 2010

This wine is sourced from a single old vine vineyard from what we consider one of the Barossa Valley’s finest growers. 2010 was one of the standout vintages of the last decade. An ideal vintage, which gave us the benefit of perfectly, ripened fruit. The smooth flow of vintage allowed us to select specific fruit parcels and allowed us to define the wine as much in the vineyard as the winery. These grapes are brought into the winery, and crushed into old vats where the fermentation is initiated by “wild” yeasts found on the grape skins. Careful extraction and short post fermentation maceration is followed by soft pressing. The wine is transferred into brand new oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation is completed before racking and maturation for 36 months in barrels. A careful assemblage and barrel selection is followed by minimal filtration and bottling.

A wine which will benefit immensely with time in the cellar to settle and develop. It will have a great lifespan of around 15 years plus.
