Tasting Notes

Gnadenfrei Estate St Michaels Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Dense deep purple-red in colour. Intense dark plum, blackberry, licorice, prune and oak. A big bold Barossa Shiraz in every aspect and unashamedly so. Black fruits dominate balanced out by savoury tannins and deep melted chocolate and oak.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Bright and opulent purple in colour. The bouquet is elegantly proportioned with obvious varietal characters of ripe blackcurrant fruit infused with mint, fresh herbs, earth and plum. Wonderful density and depth to the aromatics, which reveal really profound Cabernet Sauvignon character. Fruit driven highlighted by pure plum flavour which is a highlight of Cabernet Sauvignon this year. The intense varietal characters along with some spice ensure a powerful mid palate. Lively with a great core and backbone, the oak is well integrated and compliments but doesn’t dominate. Well-rounded smooth tannins make this one of the most Moorish Cabernet Sauvignon we have produced.

La Bise Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Deep red in colour. Plums and cashew with some aniseed that we often see in wines from this vineyard. Dark plum and cashews from the twelve months oak maturation. Dense tannins make this wine very full rich in flavour. This wine has had 18 months in new French oak and minimal filtration.

Tanunda Hill Reserve Barossa Valley Cabernet Merlot 2016

Rich dark red with violet in colour. Rich cassis, dark chocolate and red berry on the nose. Soft silky blackberry core with dark plum notes from the Merlot.  Well integrated oak giving a soft lingering finish.

Normans Old Vine Barossa Valley Chardonnay

Norman Wines is one of the oldest and most respected names in Australian winemaking. Since 1853, when Jesse Norman planted his first vines in South Australia, Normans has developed a reputation for producing premium wines of elegance and finesse. This Creamy Chardonnay is beautifully balanced with fresh flavours of citrus and tropical fruit. It is an elegant wine with a buttery texture that is to be enjoyed now.

Lambert Estate Sweet Jane Barossa Valley Riesling 2016

Sweet Jane is pale straw coloured showing fresh mandarins, grapefruit and apricots along with hints of candied citrus and tropical fruits on the nose. The luscious palate is full of sweet fruits including passionfruit, pineapple and lychee with honey complexity. The sweet finish is clean and crisp and invitingly refreshing.

Limb Vineyards Reserve Barossa Valley Rose 2017

Samourai Rose in colour. Bright juicy strawberries and raspberries as you would expect with a hint of spice and unassuming sweetness. This wine illustrates exactly how I have been handcrafting premium wine for my entire life, in the vineyard. The terror and microclimate of specific blocks produce something different each year. This year I selected the fruit to create a lively palate full of red berry fruits with cranberry and a hint of spice to add depth on the crisp yet refreshing palate.

Technical

Gnadenfrei Estate St Michaels Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Despite well below average rainfall and warm conditions during the growing season, our vines produced another outstanding vintage. Heavy rainfall in late January followed by ongoing mild days and cool nights allowed ideal ripening conditions. The fruit then matured with an early harvest. The resultant 2016 wines are outstanding and feature lifted pure red fruit characteristics, savoury tannins, great depth of flavour and sheer colour intensity. Select Old Vine Barossa Shiraz sourced from vines aged 50-80 years were used in this wine. Traditional winemaking techniques were employed and the fruit was handled in a gentle hands off approach to ensure the vineyard remained the hero. This Shiraz was matured for 16 months in 1 and 2 year old oak hogshead barrels (75% French 15% American).

Upon release allow the wine to breathe for at least a couple of hours, this wine is built to last and should drink well for the next 10-15 years.

The Colonial Estate Exile Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Sourced from a small block in the Seppeltsfield region of the Barossa. The vines that make up Exile were pruned severely and as a result of this and minimal water they produce extremely small yields. Exile grapes are all hand picked and the grapes are selected in individual batches by winemaker and vigneron. The grapes are harvested then transported to the winery where they are de-stemmed and crushed individually to small static fermenters. Fermentation was brought on by the use of select yeast strains and the temperatures peaked at 28 degrees before chilling back to 20 degrees for the completion of fermentation. The fermenters were pumped over 3 times daily to ensure the perfect amount of colour and tannin was extracted from the skins. A small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon was allowed to stay on skins for a week of additional maceration after the ferments were complete. The batches were then pressed into new French barrels where they under went malolatic fermentation and are then aged for 18 months before final barrel selection, blending and bottled with minimal filtration.

La Bise Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

La Bise is French for the kiss. We search a range of vineyards for quality fruit to produce the wines that are “true” to that vineyard and express the flavours of the grapes. We often find vineyards in need of love and attention and by rejuvenating these vineyards we give them “the kiss of life”.

The wines are about fruit and vineyard expression. We aim for mouthfeel and drinkability without high alcohol. We pick early in the vineyard to give wines that are lower in alcohol by nature as we believe this gives better drinkability and longevity.

The Barossa Valley is made up of a number of smaller subregions where climatic and soil profiles are very different. When you taste the resultant wines from these subregions, it is easy to see what these subregions give to each wine. La Bise comes from a vineyard that Natasha Mooney owns in Greenock subregion where soils and red with lots of shaly rock. Fruit flavours are dark and plummy with a lovely full tannin structure that is savoury rather than sweet.

Limb Vineyards Reserve Barossa Valley Rose 2017

The free-run juice spent several hours on skins, giving the wine its vibrant colour and flavour, prior to cool fermentation to accentuate the red fruit characteristics.
