Tasting Notes:

Bleasdale Generations Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2018

This wine shows flavours of ripe plums and other dark berries, layered with liquorice, pepper and fresh spices.

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

A massive all encompassing nose when allowed to breathe, it’s a little closed initially but once allowed to breathe you will find forest fruits, blackberries, smoked meat and pepper which are supported by a dark core of espresso bean, black currants and dried raisons. The palate shows superb concentration offering up tremendous texture and combines great fruit richness with subtle notes of leather, blackcurrant and alcohol. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although has been cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.

Clarendon Hills Liandra Mourvedre 2010

The Clarendon Hills Liandra Mourvedre opens with intense aromas of bacon fat, licorice and chocolate. Deep undertones of blackcurrant and powerful spices offer dimensional contrast. An amalgamation of richness is defined by great balance, positioned acidity and lengthy tannins. The incredible mid-palate weight provides an excellent length of intensity and considerable nuance pursues.

Pikes The Dogwalk Clare Valley Cabernet 2017

Medium to deep red. Attractive, fragrant red and black currant fruit with gentle aromas of crushed violets with hints of cedar and cigar box – the oak very much in the background as usual. Medium bodied, displaying good concentration of fruit, subtle French oak, well balanced acidity and lovely, fine tannins. The length of flavor and overall elegance of the wine are highlights.

Basedows Of Barossa Shiraz 2018

Deep brick red in colour. This wine exhibits aromas of rich, punchy spice with hints of plum jam and cracked black pepper. The palate is full and luscious and is layered with flavours of plum, spice and smoky oak. This wine has a firm fruit backbone with rich mouth filling tannins. A full bodied wine which has good length and is an excellent example of Barossa Shiraz.

Amakira Epicurus The Philosophy Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

This premium Barossa Valley Shiraz exhibits deep crimson hues and a lusciously aromatic nose. A predominance of dark blueberries and blackberries laced with star anise yields to notes of chocolate, pepper and savory spices. Full-bodied with balanced acidity and soft lingering tannin's, this delightful wine provides a smooth and satisfying finish.

Viking Odins Honour Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Dark crimson red with dark black core. Rich earthy characters with an abundance of black fruit followed by hints of chocolate, licorice, leather, black pepper and oak. This is a big traditional style of Shiraz, which we recommend is decanted and allowed to breathe prior to consuming. Black fruits are at the forefront here and an earthy character reflecting its age is also evident although freshness from the fruit and natural acid highlights its ability to age further with ease. The oak and tannin melt into the fruit and some more subtle hints of leather and just a touch of black pepper create further complexity.

Tanunda Hill Reserve Barossa Valley Merlot 2016

Rich violet plum in colour. Blueberry, the nose is full of plum and cherry fruit. The Palate mirrors the nose. This wine is full flavoured, yet medium bodied with elegant soft tannins. A typical Barossa Valley Merlot this is rich, luscious and flavoursome, just as a merlot should be.

Normans 1853 Museum Release South Australia Shiraz 2013

Strong crimson red, with a lighter red hue. Dark berries fruit nuances engulf you initially with hints of blackberry, sweet plum, black pepper and cinnamon providing further complexity. The palate is full bodied and up front shows blackberry characters highlighted by sweet plum then more subtle notes of cassis, black pepper and leather saddle. Upon another taste and time to breath the wine opens up further to display beautiful nutmeg and an almost fortified character from its obvious age which is so smooth and mouth filling it stays with you along with the oak and soft tannin structure for around 10+ seconds.

Redesdale Estate Heathcote Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2006

From 20 y/o vines of Cab Sauv, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Malbec & Merlot, aged on French oak, this beautifully cellared 2006 wine shows astounding freshness and fruit purity, a bouquet of red and blue fruits and fine-grained tannins, with a spicy back palate and aftertaste.

Technical:

Bleasdale Generations Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2018

The majestic red gums that surround Bleasdale are at the core of our remarkable history. When Frank Potts settled the land in the 1850s, he used the timber from these big, beautiful trees to build our winery. Our vineyards benefit from the rich, clay soils that also support these gums, giving generosity and longevity to our wines. The growth rings reflect the multitude of stories from past seasons and generations of family and growers alike.Shiraz was the first red grape variety planted in Langhorne Creek at Bleasdale in 1858. This wine shows flavours of ripe plums and other dark berries, layered with liquorice, pepper and fresh spices. Drinking well now, but with the potential to be a long term cellaring prospect if desired. Lightly fined and racked before bottling without filtration, it is normal for some sediment to form. Decanting one hour before drinking is recommended.

Monolith Vintners Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

The 2017 vintage proved to be another good Barossa vintage following on from the outstanding 2016 vintage which although had challenges provided excellent varietal flavours. The dry grown, old vines that yielded this fruit managed to produce wonderful fruit despite small volumes. We hand picked the fruit from a single block with vines aged up to 90 years. The fruit was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. The wine remains in a stainless steel tank until primary fermentation is completed. It is then run directly into new and old American and French hogsheads where it spent the next 24 months. Once the oak and the wine had perfectly become one the wine is blended and bottled without the use of filtration or fining. 670 six packs were produced in total.

Clarendon Hills Liandra Mourvedre 2010

Clarendon Hills are vineyard and varietal expressionists who strive for purity and perfection and seek to portray the story of the individual vineyard 'Terroir' within their wines. Clarendon Hills’ collection of the old vine vineyards in sub-regions of McLaren Vale assists in defining their international pedigree for making world class wines that rate extremely highly among the international press. Among the 9 single vineyards of Syrah is the Liandra vineyard which is located within the Blewitt Springs sub region of McLaren Vale, South Australia. All of the wines at Clarendon Hills are made by hand and are crafted using only natural processes and ingredients.

Pikes The Dogwalk Clare Valley Cabernet 2017

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Cabernet Franc (25%) – the Franc adds lovely perfume as well as some flesh to the wine. Very enjoyable as a young wine, but it will take 7-10+ years of cellaring very easily.

Basedows Of Barossa Shiraz 2018

A mild winter and a drier than normal spring led to an early flowering and fruit set for the Barossa vineyards. A hot start to summer meant that ripening occurred early and the vintage started on the 9th February with all varieties ripening in short succession. The conditions led to an excellent growing season with the reds full of density, colour and rich flavour. Despite lower than average yields, the quality of the wines from the 2018 Barossa vintage is set to be exceptional. The fruit comes from the Tanunda Hill Vineyard, located on Gomersal Road at Sheoak Log. The vineyard was established in 1999 and is planted to 10 different varieties.

Amakira Epicurus The Philosophy Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019

The ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus taught a way of living based on the belief that simple pleasures are the key to a  tranquil and happy life; a philosophy that stills rings true today.

Viking Odins Honour Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

This wine is sourced from an old dry grown vineyard with vines dating back to the early 1900’s from what we consider one of the Barossa Valley’s finest blocks. The growing season was near on perfect. An ideal vintage, which gave us the benefit of perfectly, ripened fruit. The smooth flow of vintage allowed us to select specific fruit parcels and allowed us to define the wine as much in the vineyard as the winery. These grapes are brought into the winery, and crushed into old vats where the fermentation is initiated by “wild” yeasts found on the grape skins. Careful extraction and short post fermentation maceration is followed by soft pressing. The wine is transferred into brand new oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation is completed before racking and maturation for a further 24 months in barrels.  A careful assemblage and barrel selection is followed by minimal filtration and bottling then further aging prior to release.

Normans 1853 Museum Release South Australia Shiraz 2013

The grapes were hand picked in small parcels and kept separate to ensure the best possible flavours were extracted from each parcel. The grapes were fermented in small open top fermenters and hand plunged daily. Once pressed the individual batches were left to mature in a combination of old and new French oak hogsheads. The best barrels were isolated from the rest of the blend for our Chais Clarendon release to be used for our Museum Release Series and spent up to 4 years in barrel before being bottled and aged further before release.

Redesdale Estate Heathcote Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2006

Overlooking the Campaspe River valley, visitors to Redesdale Estate Vineyard will enjoy the views and Mediterranean style gardens of this quaint restored bluestone dairy. Redesdale Estate’s vineyards are among the oldest in the cool climate southern part of the Heathcote wine region and are grown on old volcanic sendimentary rock and soils.

This rich soil contributes greatly to the intensity and varietal purity of their wines. Planted in 1982, all of Redesdale Estate’s grapes were once sold to a contract winemaker. It wasn’t until 1999 that the winery began producing their own wines. The 1999 Redesdale Estate Shiraz was the first vintage to be labelled under the Redesdale Estate label and was the first of many fine red wines made by their winemaker.

Producing estate grown red wines, Redesdale Estate handpicks their grapes with care. This ensures each bunch is in optimal condition when they begin the winemaking process.

The wines are aged in new and one-year-old French oak, and further aged for two years in the bottle. The result is award winning wines that show great elegance.

Accolades & Awards:

Bleasdale Generations Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2018

95 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"It starts with a waft of meaty reduction before florals, licorice and Middle Eastern spices take over. There's more: black plums, charry oak and a savoury overlay with plush tannins and a certain vivacity. Appeals now, but will further reward those with patience."

95 Point Rated - Sam Kim Wine Orbit

"Offering fabulous fruit flavours with spicy complexity, the wine shows mulberry, dark plum, violet, clove and cedar characters on the nose, followed by a wonderfully rounded palate that's fleshy and lingering. It's gorgeously flavoursome and satisfying with loads of tasty flavours, finishing long and velvety. At its best: 2022 to 2033."

92 Point Rated - Gary Walsh The Wine Front

"For whatever reason, I think of mobile power sources, and maybe Doctor Who. Ripe, blackberry, a bit of toasty oak and dried beef. Robust, fleshy, plenty of tannin, beef and blackberry, and black bean, good finish. Sticky ribs of tannin. Plenty of flavour."

Clarendon Hills Liandra Mourvedre 2010

95 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion

"Dense, deep, purple-crimson; has the weight, depth, textural complexity and flavour richness typical of Clarendon Hills, but no other maker. Fruit, oak and tannins are welded together in a seamless stream that will grace any red meat dish. The lack of coarse extraction is remarkable."

91+ Point Rated - Lisa Perrotti-Brown Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2010 Liandra Vineyard Syrah reveals expressive aromas of mulberries, black cherries and wild blueberries with hints of soy, yeast extract and baking spices plus a whiff of rose petals. Full-bodied and showing great poise and intensity in the mouth, it has a wonderful core of red berry and spice flavors framed by medium to firm levels of rounded tannins and lifted acidity through a long finish"

93 Point Rated - Jeremy Oliver

"One of Australia’s iconic producers, Clarendon Hills marches confidently to its own drum, crafting deeply flavoured, profoundly structured and often rather savoury and Old Worldly reds from shiraz and grenache from a variety of sites in the higher Clarendon subregion of McLaren Vale. Each are made and bottled separately, so a new vintage tasting of Clarendon Hills wine will take more than half an hour! It’s also home to some steadily improving cabernet sauvignons and some slightly idiosyncratic Mourvèdre and Merlot. The winery’s two top red wines, the Astralis Syrah and the Romas Grenache, easily justify their 5-Star status. The Domaine Clarendon Syrah is an exciting and relatively new project that should gain more standing and status as the vineyard matures. I love the ambition and attitude behind Clarendon Hills. It’s pushing the envelopes of style and quality, and it’s spectacular when it succeeds."

Pikes The Dogwalk Clare Valley Cabernet 2017

James Halliday Wine Companion

"A 75/25% blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. An interesting outcome, with the apparent ceiling of ripeness resulting in notes of herb and mint accompanying the more usual notes of blackcurrant."

Viking Odins Honour Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

96 Point Rated - Australian Wine Showcase Magazine

Redesdale Estate Heathcote Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2006

92 Point Rated - James Halliday The Wine Companion

Good hue; a severe cabernet, the fruit and tannins joining together to cause a mouth-puckering reaction; after the initial jolt, the pure varietal expression of the two cabernets is obvious; one assumes that time will soften the impact without diminishing the fruit.

Nick Butler The Real Review

"Impressively youthful colour, darkest red with bright red edges. Instantly volatile when swirled, nutty oak and stewed mixed berries. Rich and ripe purple fruits greet the palate, though tannins are abrupt. Has been stripped by barnyardy influences."

Christian Maier - Wine Masterclass

"Good ripeness- very black fruit. A good backbone of ripe tannins. Generous but ultimately very elegant, with balance between fruit tannins and acidity. Doesn’t show its age but has great class...fine grained tannins and good structure. Tasted October 2015, Heathcote region rating 9/10"

James Bone

"The wine shows restraint and poise, then some excellent primary red fruit character. Hints of blood plum, cassis and cranberry reveal themselves. The tannins are firm, the acid shows all the signs of a wine that will age well for 10 to 15 years."

Tanunda Hill Reserve Barossa Valley Merlot 2016

Decanter Asia Wine Awards

"Rich fruitcake and spice aromas. The palate is smooth with a round texture and a ripe black cherry character. Slightly pinched finish."
