Aromas of sweet floral aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle combine with grapefruit and lemon characters underpinned by a mineral thread. With a splash of residual sweetness , this wine is very more-ish. The sweet entry is balanced by a bright acidity and retained spritziness, which give the wine crispness and 'liveliness'. It has great length and is at once mouth-filling and refreshing.
Our winemakers comment that the 2009 vintage was the best they have experienced at Waimea Estates. Controlled cropping, a warm summer but cooler introduction to autumn, and a very settled harvest period, provided optimum conditions to make concentrated, premium wines across the winery's varietal range. Truly, the vintage of the decade!
The grapes for this Riesling were estate -grown on our Hunter vineyard on the Waimea Plains, which have free-draining alluvial soils.
Once at the winery our Riesling grapes are gently pressed without skin contact to minimise phenolic bitterness. The juice is treated reductively to preserve aromatic fruit characters and natural delicacy. After settling, the clean (low grape solids) juice is inoculated with a selected German yeast strain which favours quintessential Riesling characters. Ferments are slow and cool, again to protect the fresh fruit driven aromas and flavours.
After ferment, the wine was racked off its gross lees, carefully fined for stability and minor palate adjustments and then filtered prior to bottling in March 2010.
