Grove Mill has won National and International trophies for Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris; twice for "Best Wine in New Zealand" and twice for "Best of Variety in World"
This limited edition, single vineyard wine is crafted by award winning Chief Winemaker Dave Pearce, from exceptional fruit that ultimately expresses their unique terroir. As Dave says, “Only the best, only when it is the best and only when the wines really reflect their origins” do Grove Mill release a Grand Reserve wine.
Nestled in the southern valley off Wairau Plain, protected from Marlborough’s legendry nor-west winds, lies Grove Mill’s 30 hectare Seventeen Valley vineyard, home of the Grove Mill Grand Reserve range of wines. This special vineyard perfectly catches the sun, is close to the coast and consists of an extraordinary variety of soils.
Only Grove Mill wines of exceptional character are designated Grand Reserve. The especially selected grapes are crafted by the Winemakers who take the utmost care to preserve and express the character of our 17 Valley vineyard.
This Reserve style Sauvignon Blanc we have made from our 17 Valley vineyard is the first we've used a portion of French oak on. We are very pleased with the resulting distinctive expression of Sauvignon Blanc character and the typical 17 Valley terroir.
The bouquet shows a medley of sweet fruit, gooseberry, lime, minerality and well integrated oak. The palate has great intensity starting with minerality, sweet and then finishing very dry. The lasting impression is of a wine with tremendous intensity and complexity in an extremely elegant framework.
Gentle pressing (pneumatic presses) prior to cold settling. The fermentation was predominantly carried out in stainless steel tanks, with a small portion undergoing barrel fermentation in new French oak barriques. Fermentation temperatures were kept low in tank and we utilised selected yeast strains to emphasise classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc characters. After a period of yeast lees maturation the wine was carefully blended from the component parts to produce the style we see today.
