"A blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, the 2009 Emigre has a medium to deep garnet color and aromas of warm mulberries, kirsch, dried cherries and raspberry preserves over notes of underbrush and spice cake. Very full bodied and opulent, it fills the mouth with spicy red berry flavors supported by refreshing acidity and a medium level of velvety tannins, finishing long. Delicious in this youthful primary stage, it should cellar gracefully to 2020+." Lisa Perrotti-Brown 93 POINTS
Drink: 2012 - 2020

GOLD MEDAL WINNERS AT THE CONCOURS MONDIAL DE BRUXELLES 2012!!

Multiple Award Winner in Australia, New Zealand London & Shanghai including the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London one of the worlds biggest and best wine competitions!

A few weeks back a few mates, their wives & I indulged in a blind line up of some of Australia's finest red wines some in the $100's of dollars a bottle. (It's a hard job but someone has to do it!!). We tasted some of the Barossa's finest Shiraz and red blends, Coonawarra's elite Cabernet's and a range of exquisite Margaret River Bordeaux style blends plus premiums from McLaren Vale, Clare and Heathcote. To say it was like a kid in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory is an understatement. This was sheer bliss!!

One wine stood out not only for me but 3 other mates who included a vigneron, a plumber and an accountant (Yes some accountants have friends). That wine was the Colonial Estate Émigré Red Blend!! This wine has a uniqueness and charm about it that puts it up there with one of the best reds I have tasted over the last few years and I mean it's GOOD, BLOODY GOOD!! It's a harmonious blend of some of the finest fruit including Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre sourced from an array of vineyards across the Barossa from 4 main vineyards - two in cool climates, Greenock and Eden Valley, and the other two from the northern Barossa Valley.

From its first release in 2002 this wine has taken the world by storm with its amazing opulence and intensity. It's inaugural vintage was rated with a massive 95 points by the worlds most renowned critic Robert Parker Jr where he said it "has a fabulous texture as well as a massive palate" and that it is "impossible to resist" In awarding it with 95 points it outpointed over 30 vintages of Australia's premier wine Penfolds Grange ($600). Every vintage since has backed up how prestigious this outstanding wine is with rave reviews and ratings by not only Mr Parker but by the world's finest press. Lavish, opulent, elegant, seamless, supple, velvety, intense and silky are just a few superlative's that the big boys including Robert Parker, Decanter Magazine, Wine Spectator, Stephen Tanzer, Josh Raynolds and James Halliday have had to say on previous vintages of Émigré.

This 2009 vintage is a superb follow up to previous vintages and was described as Colonial's Vigneron as "The best Émigré yet". It gets better folks originally this wine was retailing for $110 a bottle but due to Colonial Estate going into receivership we have it at a LIQUIDATION PRICE OF JUST $24.99 A BOTTLE, A MASSIVE SAVING OF OVER $1000 A DOZEN. I for one am stocking the cellar up on this ripper as it will evolve beautifully over the next 15-20 years.

Here's what my mates had to say on this newly released 2009 Colonial Émigré Red Blend…

"My new favourite in the Colonial range, it seems more subtle and refined than Exile. It exhibits the same big fruit flavours with great balance between these and the alcohol, oak and tannins. It's like getting a big warm hug for your mouth and your taste buds just go crazy for it. I think it might be a blend of each of Colonials best parcels of fruit put in the cocktail shaker which results in something truly world class."

"Big fruit dominated nose with some earthy characters, it's all consuming and so alluring you can't resist taking that first sip. First sip and I was gob smacked by luscious fruit flavours of cherries, blackberries and blueberries. As the wine lingered I could feel the velvet like tannins which run seamlessly through the wine and a texture which was like melted chocolate. More complex characters then hit me with a leathery like flavour and some obvious French oak. It's a big wine with well-rounded fruit, tannin, oak and alcohol balance. Superb in every way"

Previous vintage reviews..

"This has superb backbone and lift, and a bright, very long finish."
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

"lavish in its ripe cherry and berry flavors. A humdinger to admire, but better drink it with something equally muscular."
Wine Spectator

"Full-bodied, opulent, elegant, and seamless, it is a big, well-balanced red with wonderful ripeness, nicely-integrated wood, and a long, concentrated mouthfeel."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"impressively silky texture and supple tannins"
Josh Raynolds

"The wine is the epitome of supple, lush fruit."
Stephen Spurrier - Decanter Magazine

"the velvety palate has a welcome savoury twist on the finish."
James Halliday

"It is layered, opulent, and long while maintaining its elegant personality." "Supple-textured and very intense,"
Robert Parker The Wine Advocate

Émigré is an unusual mix of varieties sourced from an array of vineyards across the Barossa from 4 main vineyards - two in cool climates, Greenock and Eden Valley, and the other two from the northern Barossa Valley. Like Exile the vines are pruned severely and receive two runs of green harvesting finally producing one tonne to the acre. Emigre grapes are then hand picked and the grapes double sorted - firstly by bunch and then, after the destemmer, by grape. Only conveyors are used to transport the grapes and the wine is fermented in wooden vats (imported from Cognac, France) after extreme cold maceration. The wines have their malolactic in new French oak, and are thereafter in the same oak-with the exception of the Shiraz, which is put into another set of new French oak for aging - two lots of new oak!

Deep inky/purple colour; cassis, blueberries, raspberry, violet, pepper lead pencil shavings and eucalyptus aromas. Fabulous texture with elegant yet subtle notes of crushed cherries, earth, blackberry, chocolate pepper and saddle leather. The tannins are almost melted as with the Exile and there is a superb backbone and lift to the wine before a long bright finish.

Should evolve beautifully in bottle over the next 15 - 20 years.
