"Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2009 Alexander Laing Old Vine Grenache reveals aromas of kirsch, warm red currants and raspberry preserves over hints of preserved mandarin peel, forest floor and dusty earth. Very full bodied with mouth-filling red berry preserve and baking spice flavors, it has a medium level of silky tannins and enlivening acidity, finishing long and spicy. Drink this one now to 2018+." 91 POINTS Robert Parker Jr's Wine Advocate
Colonial Estate Alexander Laing Barossa Grenache 2009 has picked up two major awards, and previous vintages have won over half a dozen gongs on the wine circuit including picking up silver at two of the worlds biggest and best wine shows the International Wine & Spirit Comp in London and the Vienna Wine Challenge in Austria (Our Price ($19.99) was equal pointed (Both Silver medals) with “the world’s Best Single Estate Red Wine” (IWSC 2010) Chateau Tanunda The Everest Old Bush Vine Grenache 2008 ($160 a bottle) at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2011. It’s amazing what a difference a year makes.
This exquisite Grenache sourced from 100 year old vines is an absolute MUST for any Grenache drinker!
As this has just been released there are no reviews as such but what I can tell you it is as good as if not better than previous vintages that have had huge accolades the world over.
This wine had collected some big gongs the world over including medals in Australia, New Zealand, Shanghai and most recently in Vienna where it out pointed some of the best Granaches in the entire world!
Previous accolades...
“This wine explodes at the back of the palate after a subtle and restrained attack. With a huge finish as well as loads of richness and extract, it should drink well during its first decade of life.”
Robert Parker 94 Points
“Smooth and distinctive, with a particular minerality infusing the fresh cherry, pomegranate and orange peel flavours, lingering nicely.” -
Wine Spectator.
“Deep red. Vibrantly perfumed scents of red and dark berries complicated by fresh flowers, minerals and anise. The palate brings weighty, darker fruits, gently supported by supple tannins and brightening minerality. Finishes sweet and impressively long, with excellent grip and a subtle vanillin oak character.”
Stephen Tanzer 92 Points
“Deep, saturated red. Wild, pungent aromas of dark berries, cherry compote and cured game, with floral and mineral qualities gaining power with air. Dense and brooding on the palate, slowly unfolding to offer rich dark fruit preserve and sweet herbal flavour’s. Chewy tannins add grip to the broad, sweet finish, which strongly repeats the ripe cherry quality. I'd hold off on opening this one.”
Stephen Tanzer 92 Points
“Dark, ripe and spicy, with a meaty character to the black cherry and tar flavours, lingering on the firm-textured finish.” -
Wine Spectator 90 Points
“The nose gives up spice aromas including cinnamon, white pepper, clove, and sage as well as black cherry and black raspberry. Silky-textured, elegant, and already showing some complexity.” Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 91 Points
Grenache from Alexander Laing vineyard manifests itself as small berries on small bunches that are packed with flavour. Green harvesting to one and a half tones to the acre helps, of course. That, coupled with 100-year-old vines that have already proved their provenance, gives us a perfect base. At dawn, the grapes are handpicked, double sorted - firstly by bunch then after the destemmer, by grape. Fermentation, likeour top wines, Exile and Émigré, is conducted in oak vats, followed by maloactic fermentation and ageing in 100 per cent new French oak barrels.
Dark ruby with a lovely purple tinge. Quite intense mineral and floral notes with overwhelming fresh red berries and a touch of licorice. Concentrated raspberry and red licorice flavours, with a beautiful acidity build perfectly on the palate. The wine explodes at the back of the palate after a subtle, restrained attack it has a huge finish with oak spice. Should evolve beautifully in bottle over the next 10 - 12 years.
The Colonial Estate's approach to making wines in Australia has been French. Handpicking, sorting tables where they sort individual grapes, wooden vats etc: This is what separates The Colonial Estate from most Australian wineries. No expense has been spared with only the finest of winemaking practises being utilised. Brand new French Oak, French bottles, labels etc and flying over Chateau Teyssier's winemaker for each vintage to produce wines of outstanding stature set them apart from all others.
