Tasting Notes:

Deep vibrant purple in colour, this wonderful fuse of two premium varieties complement each other with a bouquet of earthy spice and rich blackberries, the flavours coming through on the palate with rich concentrated and complex fruit and spice and liquorice.  Excellent texture and balance, finishing with full satisfying length. Matured in American and French oak.  This magnificent wine has great cellaring potential.

Technical:

Viking premium red clay vineyards produce a miniscule 2000 cases per year. These top quality wines are few and far between. The low yields are the product of 50+-year-old organically dry-grown vines.  The fruit is hand-picked at optimum ripeness-flavour, gently crushed, open-fermented and matured in a combination of French Oak and American Oak for 20 months.

The wine was bottled in November 2012.  The wines have good ageworthiness due to the power of it's fruit and high alcohol. The organically grown vineyards are over 50 years old, dry grown (non-irrigated) and hand pruned. The roots of the vines go several metres down into the deep friable soil resulting in bearing top quality berries with abundance of full flavour, colour and aroma.

Established in 1994 Viking Wines specialise in producing premium hand- crafted boutique wines with fruit sourced from premium classed old dry-grown vineyards in the sub-region Marananga, Barossa Valley.

Accolades & Awards:

With 55-year-old, dry-grown, organic vineyards yielding just 11.5 tonnes in Marananga, Viking Wines was discovered by Robert Parker Jr with inevitable consequences for the price of its top Shiraz. There are 5ha of shiraz and 3ha of cabernet sauvignon The vineyard is located in arguably the best grape growing sub region of the Barossa Valley, Marananga. The vineyard has previously been selected to provide fruit for Penfolds Grange Shiraz (2 x 100 Pts. R.P. $785) and neighbours The Torbreck Laird Shiraz (2 x 100 Pts. R.P. $900) vineyard.

"If you thought Hill of Grace was exclusive, try this on for size. Producing only 1000 cases each year, Viking Wines is perhaps the hottest "it" winery in the Barossa Valley. Not terribly well known yet (only 3-4 cars pull up each day to the winery), but very affordable and on the cusp of a giant wave of success."
Drew Lambert, Vine Talk.

Previous vintages the wine press have raved about including the world's most influential wine critic Robert Parker Jr saying 'It is a big backstrapping, robust Shiraz, the likes of which cannot be produced elsewhere in the world' and James Halliday saying that it is "immensely powerful and concentrated
