The Thorn-Clarke family has a long history in the Barossa - six generations of involvement in the region's world famous wine industry. The family lays claim to one of the oldest Shiraz vineyards in Australia and possibly the world on the Thorn family property 'Clifton' outside of Angaston. Earliest records show this old vineyard was in existence in 1854.
The family were pioneers in the Barossa as well but most famously in the mining of gold from the Barossa Goldfields. One of their ancestors was James Goddard who was the responsible for opening the Lady Alice gold mine in the Barossa goldfields and which was the largest gold mine in South Australia at the time. This wine lays testament to James Goddard one of the true pioneers of the Barossa.
Thorn-Clarke is today one of the largest vineyard owners in the Barossa, and has received recognition from critics such as James Halliday and Robert Parker as one of the Barossa's great producers.
The colour is a deep inky purple. The nose is a complex mixture of ripe blackberry and plum fruit with a dash of creamy vanillin oak. The palate is medium to full bodied which starts with some sweet plummy fruit, the flavour then builds in the palate to provide an explosion of raspberry flavours. There is some lovely mouth coating tannins which combine with dark chocolate oak and fruit to provide a great depth and length of flavour. An excellent vintage, with very little extreme weather resulting in fantastic colour and flavour.
