Deep black and purple colour with a slightly bluish hue. Fresh, spicy blackcurrants with a touch of minty liquorice contribute to this classic Cabernet nose finishing with a delightful touch of new oak. Lovely purity, superb ripeness and stunning rich black currant, liquorice, cedar and spice characters. Firm, fruity tannins provide the backbone, which is well fleshed out and long.
Grapes were specifically sourced from the area around our favourite sub region of the Barossa – Greenock. Its hard country with the shallow grey sandy soil over red clay producing small bunches of intense, non-herbaceous Cabernet Sauvignon. Cropping levels were low and much of the older vineyards were hand picked and selected by vigneron and winemaker especially for the high fruit intensity of the individual grapes. We use extreme cold maceration to extract as much natural fruit flavour as possible and use open top fermenters and hand plunge keeping our old world winemaking philosophy front of mind during the entire process to ensure only the finest wine is aged in barrel for 12 months prior to final blending and minimal filtration.
At the San Francisco International Wine Competition, The Colonial Estate Etranger Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 equalled the performance of USA big name wines like Rocca Family Tesorina Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 and the TwentyFour Charles Woodson Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 both valued at $150 a bottle. It also ranked alongside Australian favourites like:
Reschke Bos Cabernet 2004 (93 points Halliday at $43) and premium priced labels such as,
Alpha Crucis Cabernet 2011 at $75 and
Chateau Reynella Basket Pressed Cabernet 2010 at $56 and Gatt High Eden Cabernet 2010 at $55.
With its award at China, it outclassed Shingleback D Block Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 ($60) and equalled...
Wolf Blass Gold Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (94 points Halliday $28),
The Lane Vineyard 19th Meeting Cabernet 2010 (93 points Halliday at $65),
Shingleback The Davey Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 (92 points Halliday at $25) and
Reschke Vitulus Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (90 points Halliday at $28).
"Generous sweet, ripe varietal fruit on both nose and palate. Plenty of fruit flavour, good textured tannins and oak balance."
