BRAND NEW VINTAGE OF ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S MOST HIGHLY AWARDED WINES!
"... it's almost pruney flavours that are powerful and smooth. Plenty will like the style. "
Peter Forrestal 'Quaff 2010'
Normans Chais Clarendon has become over the past 20 years since it was first created one of Australia's most highly awarded wines with rave reviews the world over. It has won in excess of 100 medals and trophies at domestic and international award shows with some of the many highlights being named Winestate Wine of The Year, a GOLD medal winner in the Visy great Australian shiraz challenge, a GOLD medal Winner in the Melbourne Wine Show in the Jimmy Watson Class, A GOLD Medal Winner in the London International Wine Fair and that just in the past 7 years!
This 2008 vintage has been rated by Normans winemaker as a wine that could go down with one of the great Chais Clarendon's of all time. Largely due to the perfect growing conditions that the 2008 vintage produced and the decision to return to the original winemaking techniques that made Chais Clarendon the highly regarded wine it is. This has only been made possible by the new private owners of Normans whose belief and love of the brand has given the winemaking team so much confidence.
Two vineyards were hand picked after months of inspection throughout the growing season in the Barossa Valley. Both vineyards are in the iconic village of Greenock and the old vines are aged up to 40 years and are as sought after as any grapes in the Barossa Valley.
After picking the grapes in the cool morning breeze which blows over the Greenock Ranges, the grapes were destemmed them without crushing, allowing fermentation with a percentage of whole berries but without the addition of sulphur. The grapes were then fermented in small open top fermenters using inoculated yeast. Temperature and time on skins was the most critical part of the winemaking process and when the desired level of flavour and tannin was extracted from the skins the wine was drained off into new and used hogshead barrels to complete the fermentation.
Pressings were used in the blend then the wine went into barrel for final maturation. The wine was matured in old French oak for 6 months before transferring it into new French oak for 6 months then it was decided the wine was reaching the perfect level of oak so the wine was put down for a further 6 months in old French oak for a total maturation period of 18 months.
I would suggest sneaking a box into the cellar and waiting for a rainy day while the awards roll in! This is phenomenal value!
