Suzanne Trott is one of Australia’s few long established women vignerons, and is committed to the production of high quality fruit from her vineyards. The fruit for the 2010 vintage has come from the Blewitt Springs sub-region, where sandy soils, high elevation and lower ambient temperatures have produced an elegant, more savoury expression of Shiraz than McLaren Vale proper. Five Geese wines are crafted by Mike Farmilo, award winning winemaker and wine show judge.
"The excellent colour is deep in contrast to the 2009, and both the bouquet and palate are full to the brim with delicious blackberry and plum fruit, dark chocolate, tannins and oak in the background. This will drink well from the get-go, but also see out 10+ years without batting an eyelid." James Halliday 94 POINTS
Rich, luscious crimson red. Perfumed spice, dark berry and oak aromas. Pronounced berry and early season cherries, with a sweet finish. Soft tannins on the middle palate and fine oak give a velvety feel to the lingering fruit.
Plucked from the 46 year old vines in a favourable vintage without the extremes of heat or rain, carefully tended by Mike Farmilo and his team, the wine was put through a year long barrelling of French and American oak.
The result is a wine designed to drink now, with careful cellaring potential to 8 years.
Sue Trott has 32 Hectares of vineyards in the McLaren Vale region of South Australia. Hillgrove is making wines from her Blewitt Springs vineyards. Nestled in the northeastern end of the Willunga Basin, Blewitt Springs lies about 180m above sea level. This slightly higher elevation provides a cooler climate than nearby McLaren Vale and Willunga. With cooler temperatures and moderating afternoon sea breezes, the grapes grown here enjoy a long, even ripening season. Vintage in Blewitt Springs is often some two to three weeks later than the rest of the district. These extra weeks give the fruit time to develop more complex flavour ripeness, without the excessive baumes found in warmer areas. The grapes develop a beautiful balance of flavour, acidity, and sugar, which then translate into complex, but not overly alcoholic wines.
