"Very deep garnet-purple colored, Hickinbotham’s 2009 Shiraz Cabernet has pronounced cassis, graphite, cedar, lavender, earth, tar and tobacco leaf aromas with a whiff of black olives. Rich, opulent and spicy in the mouth with tons of dark berry fruit, it is not shy on the structure either giving crisp acid and medium-firm grainy tannins that lend a taut backbone through the long finish. Delicious now, it should keep drinking well until 2016+."
91 Points Robert Parkers Wine Advocate
My "RED WINE PICK OF 2011" was a hard decision with so much to choose from but I kept coming back to one wine and boy, oh boy does this wine deliver the goods to be awarded MY VALUE FOR MONEY RED WINE OF 2011. DH Hickinbotham Clarendon Shiraz Cabernet 2009 (JUST $9.99) is sourced from the Hickinbotham's vineyard at Clarendon in McLaren Vale which has supplied fruit for some of Australia's most lauded and expensive wines, including Penfold's Grange, Eileen Hardy Shiraz, Penfold's Bin 707 Cab Sauv and has been featured by Robert Parker in his book "The World's Great Estates". Under its export label Robert Parker Jr's Wine Advocate awarded it with 91 points and described it as "Rich, opulent and spicy". THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE VALUE AT ONLY $9.99 A BOTTLE and is deservedly MY VALUE FOR MONEY RED WINE OF 2011.
Unrelenting drought limited winter rains and threatened the growing seasons water availability, as a result the yields were down although this ensured optimum maturity in flavour, aroma and tannin profiles and the excessive summer heat wave amplified the richness and intensity you have come to expect from Clarendon wines. Intense maroon core maintaining depth of colour throughout the glass. Ripe blackcurrant and spices of cinnamon and anise are supported by mocha and cedar aromas generated from oak maturation. The palate shows a fruity profile which is further complexed subtle oak integration, a full body, fine grained silky tannins and balanced structured that has a long desirable finish.
A TRULY AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO GET A WINE FROM ONE OF THE WORLDS FINEST ESTATES FOR UNDER A TENNER.
Edward John Peake planted Australia's first high country vines at Clarendon in 1858 - a cool climate vineyard designed to run naturally. For various reasons Clarendon lapsed as a vine site until the Hickinbotham family recognised it's very unique advantages in the early 1970's & planted 200 acres on the highest land. Most of the vineyards enjoy a favoured North Easterly aspect on land sloping to the Onkaparinga River & many of the vine areas are dry grown. The Hickinbotham Clarendon vineyard, at the northern end of McLaren Vale, has supplied fruit for some of Australia's most lauded and expensive wines, including PENFOLDS GRANGE & EILEEN HARDY SHIRAZ and is also the source for some of McLaren Vales most iconic brands from the sub-region of Clarendon including Clarendon Hills and Hickinbotham brands. The estate was featured by ROBERT PARKER IN HIS BOOK "THE WORLD'S GREATEST WINE ESTATES".
