Deep cherry in colour. This wine exhibits aromas of rich, punchy spice with hints of plum jam and black cracked pepper. The palate is full and luscious and is layered with flavours of plum, spice and chocolate. This wine has a firm fruit backbone with rich gentle mouth filling tannins. A full bodied wine which has good length and is an excellent example of Barossa Shiraz.
In 1896 the foundations of the Basedow winery were laid. For nearly 120 years it has consistently produced some of the finest wines from the Barossa, South Australia. Today Basedow is the second oldest family owned winery in the region, a long and proud heritage established by the founder, Johannes Christoff Basedow. The Basedow family shared a real interest in the developing wine trade of the late 19th century, Friedrich Basedow, Johannes older brother, was in fact a founder of the Roseworthy Agricultural College, a leading institution for winemakers world wide. It seemed obvious then, for Johannes to indulge in his passion, so in 1896 he built the Basedow winery.
The fruit comes from several different vineyards situated on the Barossa Valley floor. The vineyards range from 15 to 30 years old and yield on average 4t/acre. A wet winter and a cool spring allowed for ample soil moisture and left good reserves of groundwater for the dry summer months. A mild summer with cool nights, moderate days and only one short heatwave facilitated good fruit set which saw disease-free ripening. The vintage started early February with white varieties ripening in short succession. The cooler conditions led to an excellent growing season with white wines showing delicate flavours and aromas, while the reds were full of density, colour and rich flavour. Despite lower than average yields, the quality of the wines from the 2012 Barossa vintage is set to be exceptional.
