Tasting Notes:

This 2012 Chockstone Shiraz is a nice ripe beauty. It displays overt brambly notes and has a soft and generous palate. But don't be fooled, under that opulent exterior lies a seriously complex and age-worthy wine. A richly layered palate of blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate and black pepper spice is augmented with hints of violets, bacon fat, and liquorice. These layers of flavour give way to a warm, velvety structure and lead into a long, plush finish.

Technical:

As a result of the warm summer temperatures in the 2012 season, the relatively low yielding vines allowed the Shiraz grapes to attain a full degree of ripeness and a wide range of flavours. These conditions have conspired to produce an elegant and rich 2012 Chockstone Shiraz that displays a full spectrum of dark berry flavours that are balanced with our characteristic black pepper spice. Chockstone Shiraz is known for its complex layers of flavours, nicely balanced natural acidity, and fine tannins. Picking the grapes at optimum maturity, just as we start to taste pepper spice is the key to obtaining our refined style.

What follows in the cellar is long un-hurried fermentation that promotes the careful development of the wine's restrained personality. Aging in carefully selected older American and French barrels was the final step in creating this 2012 Chockstone Shiraz. This 2012 Chockstone Shiraz is a sophisticated, pretty thing now, but if you have the patience and watch how it evolves over the next decade or two.

It goes with just about everything or on its own to savour and contemplate. I don't know how to describe nuances on the palate but just know it tastes good compared with other shiraz and I'm happy to recommend it to red wine lovers. .

Rated 5 out of 5 by Peter JH from Lovely Cool Climate Shiraz This wine is a lovely rich cool climate shiraz with intense blackberry and chocolate flavours together with characteristic black pepper spices. It has a velvety 'mouthfeel' and is a great value wine with potential to improve with age.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Pieter from Well rounded with depth of dark tasting note I have bought Chockstone for about 12 months, and its my regular go to red wine, for the price point it will impress your guests. I packed 6 bottles for a trip to Dubai and the effort was well worth it, the wine starved expats loved it, I didn't have the heart to tell them the price tag. I find that it improves if opened a couple of hours prior to tasting and even a day later it is very well rounded. If I'm in a hurry I pour it into a glass jug and funnel it back into the bottle. I recommend this drop, its from the Grampians in Western Victoria and a good example of traditional Australian red wine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by smac from Cool climate big fruit I expected a more elegant, seamless wine given it's cool climate Grampian origins but was pleasantly surprised by the bold fruit that comes through on the back of such a medium weight - think Barossa without the heat or heavyness. A consistently well made shiraz, Halliday rates this as outstanding (94 points) and the next vintage (2013) even better at 95 points with a bullet.
