A deep garnet colour, this 2011 Chockstone Shiraz displays an abundance of black and white pepper spices intertwined with a range of rich and ripe berry fruits. Notes of black cherries, cassis, dark chocolate and even hints of smoked meats add rich complexity to a central theme of spiciness.
This generously proportioned, medium-full bodied wine of soft acidity and refined structure finishes with a surprisingly vibrant tail-end that is both mellow and expressive.
The 2011 season was characterized by moderate temperatures and overcast, rainy weather. The cool moist conditions conspired to provide the grapes with less sun and temperature accumulation than in more typical years. And as an exciting demonstration of how terroir really does drive the personality of our wines, this unusual season has imprinted its unique signature on this wonderfully spicy 2011 Chockstone Shiraz.
Expecting to obtain soft tannins and great peppery spice from the harvest, we limited the pre-fermentation maceration period, and kept the fermentations cool and simple in order to attain a delicate balance of flavours, a structured profile and silky tannins.
The aging period was also relatively short, and the blend was aged in mostly older barrels, selected to add richness and subtle textures to the spicy profile. It is pleasing to see that this Chockstone Shiraz from such a unique season is a magical combination of elements; spices on a core of rich, ripe fruit, and a creamy texture on a fine tannin finish.
RATED 91 POINTS
(JAMES HALLIDAY, AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION 2014).
Full purple-crimson, very good for the vintage; ripe, round spiced plum and licorice aromas and flavours are bolstered by obvious oak and good tannins.
