With a history of periodic flooding from the Wairau River, the Marlborough region is now protected by the construction of earth barriers or Stopbanks along the river’s edge. We recognise this resourceful engineering design as integral to the success of one of the world’s most vibrant wine regions.
Growing along the river is the Harekeke, a flax unique to New Zealand, which thrives along with the vineyards of Marlborough.
Sourced from low yielding, well-tended vineyard sites the fruit for this wine was picked at optimal ripeness and transported to the winery for de-stemming and chilling. Each batch was cold soaked in open-top tanks for three days and then fermented. During fermentation each batch was hand plunged up to six times a day to extract colour and flavour. The wine then went through full malolactic fermentation and was aged on lees before being blended, stabilised and prepared for bottling.
Niche Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2017
Fruit was sourced from selected vineyard blocks in Marlborough. After the grapes were destemmed and transferred to the tank press where the free run juice was separated and the remaining fruit lightly pressed. The juice was then allowed to cold settle to a clear state then racked into stainless steel fermenters. The juice was the inoculated with selected yeasts to add the required complexity and aromaticity. The ferment period was 14 days while the wine was kept at between 11-14 degrees. After a short period of yeast contact the wine was racked for final blending before being bottled to capture all the tropical fruit flavours.
Make to drink upon release while the fruit flavour is at its most fresh and vibrant although will develop more complexity over the short term.
Koha Marlborough Pinot Gris 2014
Cane pruned on VSP trellising. Pinot Gris flourishes on the free draining river banks of our Reynolds block. Natural balance between vine growth and fruit maturity provides richly scented fruit with deep flavours.
Our Pinot Gris fruit was harvested throughtout the cool April evenings of 2014, transferred to the winery where it underwent temperature controlled fermentation (12 - 1 degres celcius) in stainless steel tanks using Alsatian yeast cultures to enhance Pinot Gris aromas and flavours. Post ferment maturation on fine lees allowed us to build a refined texture and palate weight into this wine.

Bright, light straw-yellow colour with pale golden hues, lighter on the edge. The nose is moderately concentrated with steely and refreshing aromas of white and yellow stonefruits, along with subtle notes of fresh herbs and exotic florals, unfolding minerally lees notes. The aromatics build in depth with aeration. Dryish to taste and medium-bodied, the palate possesses flavours of peach and yellow stonefruits along with notes of exotic tropical fruits and honeysuckle, with mineral nuances emerging. The mouthfeel is bright and energetic with light fruit extract and phenolic textures, and fresh, lacy acidity. As the wine flows, sweet fruit and floral notes unfold and carry to an elegant, lingering finish.

Brilliant, very pale straw colour with slight green hues, near colourless on the rim. This has a very fresh, intense and tightly bound nose with penetrating aromas of passionfruit, gooseberries, fresh herbs and snow peas, along with white florals and mouthwatering mineral nuances. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is up-front with rich and juicy, accessible, mouthfilling flavours of passionfruit and gooseberries. The wine is harmonious in presentation and flows smoothly with softly fresh underlying acidity and subtle textures. The wine carries to a soft, even, integrated and easy finish. This is an accessible, gently mouthfilling Sauvignon Blanc with harmoniously integrated passionfruit and gooseberry flavours on a fresh, but smooth palate.
